How staff can support pupils in mainstream settings

All our early learning and primary school establishments have a Boardmaker Studio site licence.  The Education Department purchased these so that all would have equitable access to the appropriate visual supports for children.

Symbols should be used consistently to support children with social communication needs.  They can be used in various ways, including to:

  • support / replace verbal communication
  • help reduce anxiety using a First / Next / Then approach
  • create structure through individual / whole group / class timetables
  • support independent working through individualised work schedules

Symbols have also been used to make entire learning environments more inclusive.  This is an area that the Educational Psychology Service has been researching.
