Outdoor numeracy and orienteering

We had a great afternoon outside on this cold crisp December day. Our shape today was a pentagon and we were brilliant at organising ourselves into this shape really quickly. 👍

We started off with a warm up game to investigate products of two digit and one digit numbers. We worked out a formula to do this mentally.

Later on we moved on to developing our map reading and orienteering skills that we started to learn about last week.

Finally we played a game created and setup by some of our class. Here is a video of them explaining the game, just click on the link below.

Observation and mapping skills

What a difference a week makes! The weather was beautiful today with the sun splitting the skies and the rain staying away for most of the morning.

We started off the session by taking part in an activity to improve our observation skills and it was great that we could use our hi-tech clipboards that we made last week too!

After that we played some mapping games where we learned the importance of identifying where north is and holding our maps the correct way round.

Finally we worked on creating some of our own games. Mrs Kelly was really impressed with how we came up with games to develop some of the learning we are doing in class on triangles. Aaminah and Charlotte were key in coming up with the idea of the  game and Lewis and Dylan did really well with the practical organisation of the resources. Mrs Kelly also loved the idea of one of our games which will develop our mapping skills a bit further and is going to create some maps for us to use next week so that we can play our game fully.

All in all a marvellous day, and as Leah said, “we are not just doing outdoor learning, we learning about so many other things outside too.”

Outdoor learning

What a day for our first outdoor learning session with Mrs Kelly! We got absolutely drenched but thankfully our waterproofs protected us and we dried off pretty quickly once we were inside again!

Here are some photos of us working in teams solving a problem Mrs Kelly set for us. We used skills in estimating length  to start of then moved on to logic and mental maths skills. Most of all we showed amazing resilience sticking at the problem despite the torrential rain. A brilliant first outdoor learning session! Well done everyone. 👍😊

It’s the summer holidays!!

It’s the last day of school for summer, I don’t know about you but I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone – it must be because you have all made it so enjoyable!

Thank you to you all for being so enthusiastic about learning, so helpful, respectful, caring and of course for having such great personalities and a sense of humour. I have loved teaching every single one of you and I don’t think there’s been a day (or even an hour) where you haven’t made me laugh! I’ll take away so many wonderful memories from this year and I hope that you do too! I know you will all have a fantastic year in P6 as you all have such a positive attitude and I hope you will continue to have a growth mindset to all challenges ahead! Keep trying hard and doing your best – nobody can ask anymore of you than that! Have a great summer, you all deserve it after all your hard work this year! 🌟

Sporting fortnight!

Over the last 2 weeks, P5.17 have been refining skills in P.E to improve and finding out how their body reacts to increased exercise. They watched a video and read about the respiratory system before testing their knowledge. They had a race to complete a series of P.E challenges and even set P.E challenges for their peers within the class. All of this practise, helped them with their sports day activities this week. The pupils were very inventive with their activities, some pupils did some hula hooping, others did egg and spoon races, some did keepie uppies (some with a football and others with toilet roll) and there were even some obstacle courses too!

Well done to all the pupils for all their fantastic efforts! Everyone is being very creative with their ideas and participating to the best of their ability!

Distance Learning

Recently, many pupils around the world have been learning at home. P5.17 are no different but have certainly rose to the challenge! We have all been working very hard to continue demonstrating a strong commitment to learning despite the current world issues.

This week , we have acknowledged the work of our heroes, who are helping us during this time. We’ve drawn pictures of our NHS heroes and made birthday cards to celebrate the 100th birthday of Captain Tom Moore. Captain Tom has raised over £32 000 000 and this total is rising everyday! We are all so proud of the efforts of everyone to help during this time.

To Finley,

Sorry we didn’t get to say a proper goodbye to you, we never expected this would happen so quickly.

K’nex challenge

As part of STEM fortnight, we have been participating in the primary 5 K’nex challenge. First, we did some mini challenges to find out about the different parts and then we started on the main challenge. The main challenge was to follow a design brief to make a bridge that could open. We had so much fun and learnt about the planning process, the construction process and the assessment process. We also learnt how to make structures stable and sturdy and what shapes support structures best.

Our Burns Supper

Last week we hosted our Burns Supper. We worked really hard on the preparations. We learnt dances, songs and a poem and even did some artwork for the decorations on the night. On the night, we put on a great performance, served haggis, neeps and tatties and drinks to the guests, and ended with dancing and Auld Lang Syne. We were so thankful to all the guests who came along to see what all our hardwork had resulted in. Since then, we have used our knowledge of Scots language to write about our experiences of the Burns Supper. Look out for our writing in the next school newsletter to find out our feelings on the event.

Teeth Experiment

Our science topic is teeth. We experimented on what drinks are bad for your teeth and what is not . We used egg shells as teeth and put them in various drinks. After a week we found out that Coca Cola and blackcurrant juice were the worst drink out of the drinks we used. We had lots of fun doing this experiment.
