Christmas tree problem solving

What a fabulous morning! We started off getting into the shape of a star as our first challenge. After lots of discussion we managed it brilliantly. Mrs Kelly said she wished that she had a drone to show us just how great our shape looked! The photos below donโ€™t really show it as well as we would like.

Our next challenge was to create a stand alone Christmas tree. We went through the design process and experienced a variety of success as we worked through planning, design, manufacture, modification and evaluation. One thing for sure is that we were are fully focused and involved in our team.

Outdoor problem solving

What a marvellous day of learning. We packed in so much today and had a great time with lots of laughing and fun too. We started off walking towards a beautiful view of the sun rising above the trees and arranged ourselves into a hexagon exceptionally quickly – our organisational skills as a class are really developing well. ๐Ÿ‘

Next weย moved on to solving our first problem of the day which involved creating a hexagon by placing two equilateral triangles on top of each other. We were then challenged to work out the size of the angles inside the hexagon given that all the little triangles on the outside were also equilateral.

After we spent time in groups trying to solve this and then learned how to calculate them together as a class, we set our own different challenges to show our understanding of supplementary angles. This is a very tricky concept and requires a lot of problem solving so we are all really proud of what we learned today and how we are growing in confidence discussing angles. Click on the links below to hear some of the questions we created.

After break time we moved on to a new challenge also involving triangles but this time investigating and working together to discover the minimum number of moves to invert a triangle. Here are some photos of us doing just that.

Outdoor numeracy and orienteering

We had a great afternoon outside on this cold crisp December day. Our shape today was a pentagon and we were brilliant at organising ourselves into this shape really quickly. ๐Ÿ‘

We started off with a warm up game to investigate products of two digit and one digit numbers. We worked out a formula to do this mentally.

Later on we moved on to developing our map reading and orienteering skills that we started to learn about last week.

Finally we played a game created and setup by some of our class. Here is a video of them explaining the game, just click on the link below.

Observation and mapping skills

What a difference a week makes! The weather was beautiful today with the sun splitting the skies and the rain staying away for most of the morning.

We started off the session by taking part in an activity to improve our observation skills and it was great that we could use our hi-tech clipboards that we made last week too!

After that we played some mapping games where we learned the importance of identifying where north is and holding our maps the correct way round.

Finally we worked on creating some of our own games. Mrs Kelly was really impressed with how we came up with games to develop some of the learning we are doing in class on triangles. Aaminah and Charlotte were key in coming up with the idea of the ย game and Lewis and Dylan did really well with the practical organisation of the resources. Mrs Kelly also loved the idea of one of our games which will develop our mapping skills a bit further and is going to create some maps for us to use next week so that we can play our game fully.

All in all a marvellous day, and as Leah said, โ€œwe are not just doing outdoor learning, we learning about so many other things outside too.โ€
