WWII Solo Talks

This week, the children have been presenting their amazing WWII solo talks. Each child has further researched an aspect of the war which they find interesting. So far we have had brilliant presentations about Aircraft, Kindertransport, Adolf Hilter, The Holocaust and many, many more. I look forward to hearing and providing feedback for the other children in the class early next week. 🌟🌟🌟

The Designers – Mearns Masters

Today we were joined by Mr Derek Hill, who is the course director of Architectural Studies at Strathclyde University. Mr Hill joined us to launch our new Mearns Masters programme – The Designers. This session started with a PowerPoint all about Architect. We then focussed on our drawing techniques with various fun drawing tasks. This included us drawing with two pens and with our eyes closed. We finished today’s session by starting our very own β€˜Invisible Cities’ pictures, inspired by our class book. I have attached some pictures below 🌟🌟.

Christmas tree problem solving

What a fabulous morning! We started off getting into the shape of a star as our first challenge. After lots of discussion we managed it brilliantly. Mrs Kelly said she wished that she had a drone to show us just how great our shape looked! The photos below don’t really show it as well as we would like.

Our next challenge was to create a stand alone Christmas tree. We went through the design process and experienced a variety of success as we worked through planning, design, manufacture, modification and evaluation. One thing for sure is that we were are fully focused and involved in our team.

Outdoor problem solving

What a marvellous day of learning. We packed in so much today and had a great time with lots of laughing and fun too. We started off walking towards a beautiful view of the sun rising above the trees and arranged ourselves into a hexagon exceptionally quickly – our organisational skills as a class are really developing well. πŸ‘

Next weΒ moved on to solving our first problem of the day which involved creating a hexagon by placing two equilateral triangles on top of each other. We were then challenged to work out the size of the angles inside the hexagon given that all the little triangles on the outside were also equilateral.

After we spent time in groups trying to solve this and then learned how to calculate them together as a class, we set our own different challenges to show our understanding of supplementary angles. This is a very tricky concept and requires a lot of problem solving so we are all really proud of what we learned today and how we are growing in confidence discussing angles. Click on the links below to hear some of the questions we created.

After break time we moved on to a new challenge also involving triangles but this time investigating and working together to discover the minimum number of moves to invert a triangle. Here are some photos of us doing just that.
