K’Nex Final 🌉

Today we held our class final of the P6, K’Nex challenge. First, we planned out our designs in our jotters with our partner and considered the different stages of the build, colours and patterns that we wanted to include.

We then had one hour to create our structure there was a wide range of different creations including drawbridges, famous landmarks, wheels and rockets 🚀

BBC Visitors 🗞️

Today, we were very fortunate to receive special visitors from the BBC. They told the class all about their experiences, one working as a journalist, and the other working with media.

We learnt about the News Needs Wheel  which helps to recognise different ways of looking at news to capture a range of audiences.

We also reflected on newspaper articles from the Mearns Marvellous Mail and considered ways we could use the wheels to follow up on our stories 🗞️

Final Designers 🎨

Today we finished off our plant pot designs by painting 🎨 we’re hoping to give our finished pots to the Indoor Garden to sell at their stall, profits will be going to the British Heart Foundation ❤️

We had a range of designs including superheroes, patterns and minions!

Sky Academy 🎥

We had a great afternoon at the Sky Academy where we worked in groups to create our very own factual report. We each took on different roles and worked together to create a script, film the report and finally we got to watch it all come together at the end 🎥

Designers Week 3 🔨

Yesterday we had our third session in the MakerSpace and our aim was to complete our plant pot design. We all achieved this successfully which means that we are ready to decorate our pots next week to round off this block.

We had a reflection in class about the challenges that we faced last week, some wood bases did not stick together and it was challenging to cut wood exactly to size. Therefore today we discussed alternatives where we could use such as cardboard which is easier to cut and can be reinforced with foam to stop the water from the plants leaking. Or alternatively we discussed continuing with our wood bases and using wood glue, cellotape, masking tape or creating indents to create the walls 🔨

We also discussed the importance of using our meta-skills to overcome challenges during the design process, in particular adapting, collaborating and focusing 💭

Writing Biographies ✍🏼

Over the last few weeks we have been developing our writing when creating a Biography. We have learnt that these are factual recounts of a persons life and include subheadings. The class have enjoyed researching individuals of our choice and have created some excellent pieces of writing on musicians, artists, historical figures and sports people to name but a few ✍🏼

Designers Week 2 🪚

Today in Designers we began creating our plant pot based. We spoke about the importance of measuring accurately in order that the container could fit inside and then we carefully cut the wood to fit our measurements 🪚 we then used wood glue to stick it together 👌🏼

New Lanark Trip 🚌

We had a great day at New Lanark for our Primary 6 trip. All groups got the chance to experience a Victorian classroom, the Annie MacLeod experience and ride, a guided of the grounds and an interactive tenement museum!
