Even more STEAM WEEK! 🧬

We have been participating in the East Renfrewshire Sumdog Competition and today managed to climb to 2nd in the table for the authority.

We then had a visit from Dr Joyce who told us all about her role as a paediatrician. We learnt about the aftercare given to premature babies, CPR and doctors care for children in the hospitals.

STEM Buoyancy Challenge ⛵️

We worked in pairs to complete a STEM challenge focused around buoyancy ⛵️ we were given tinfoil, a straw, toothpicks and lollipop sticks to create a boat. We tested whether it could float and added coins to see if the structure could handle additional weight 💰

BBC Young Reporter 2024 🎥

We had an action packed day at the BBC Young Reporter Event at Trades Hall in Glasgow 🎥

We started off the day with a session about real or fake news with BBC Journalist Paul Brown. We looked at evidence, found names, locations and dates then looked around at other sources to whether a story was accurate.

We then heard from the author Brian Conaghan and heard all about his journey from being a painter and decorator, to teaching and then to writing his own novels. He also gave an exclusive reading of his new book ‘Treacle Town’ which is set in Coatbridge.

Next, we moved onto our making a live podcast session. We created scripts, recorded VoxPops and worked together to include music and transitions.

Finally we rounded off with an animations session followed by a Q&A from River City Executive Producer Martin and a Quiz!

We also met our favourite newsround presenter Martin!

K’Nex Final 🌉

Today we held our class final of the P6, K’Nex challenge. First, we planned out our designs in our jotters with our partner and considered the different stages of the build, colours and patterns that we wanted to include.

We then had one hour to create our structure there was a wide range of different creations including drawbridges, famous landmarks, wheels and rockets 🚀

BBC Visitors 🗞️

Today, we were very fortunate to receive special visitors from the BBC. They told the class all about their experiences, one working as a journalist, and the other working with media.

We learnt about the News Needs Wheel  which helps to recognise different ways of looking at news to capture a range of audiences.

We also reflected on newspaper articles from the Mearns Marvellous Mail and considered ways we could use the wheels to follow up on our stories 🗞️
