Coding – Week 1 πŸ’»

Today we began our new block of Mearns Masters – The Coders πŸ’»

Over the next 5 weeks we will be working on Scratch to code a game that matches our remit: Create a game that includes a character flying or jumping, collecting rewards and a scoreboard that goes up.

We looked at ideas from previous years and discussed adding sounds, settings and challenges within our game.

We then created storyboards for our games to plan how our game will develop as we add code.

A great start to this pathway and we are looking forward to beginning our code on Scratch for our new games next week πŸ’»

Designers Week 3 πŸ”¨

Yesterday we had our third session in the MakerSpace and our aim was to complete our plant pot design. We all achieved this successfully which means that we are ready to decorate our pots next week to round off this block.

We had a reflection in class about the challenges that we faced last week, some wood bases did not stick together and it was challenging to cut wood exactly to size. Therefore today we discussed alternatives where we could use such as cardboard which is easier to cut and can be reinforced with foam to stop the water from the plants leaking. Or alternatively we discussed continuing with our wood bases and using wood glue, cellotape, masking tape or creating indents to create the walls πŸ”¨

We also discussed the importance of using our meta-skills to overcome challenges during the design process, in particular adapting, collaborating and focusing πŸ’

Designers Week 2 πŸͺš

Today in Designers we began creating our plant pot based. We spoke about the importance of measuring accurately in order that the container could fit inside and then we carefully cut the wood to fit our measurements πŸͺš we then used wood glue to stick it together πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

Showcase Preparation πŸ§ΈπŸ“–

Today we spent time preparing for our Campaigners Swap Shop Event. We were amazed at the amount of pre-loved items that had been donated as well as the wide variety of books and teddies 🧸

We split into small groups and created signs that we will display at our desk when visitors arrive to the swap shop.

The Campaigners: Exploring the Fast Fashion Industry πŸ›οΈ

Today we continued to explored Fast Fashion and looked more closely at the rights of workers.

We started by ranking different factors that we consider when buying a T-shirt. We identified colour, brand, Β price, fit and fabric as being very important. Meanwhile we don’t often think about the wages of the worker that made the product, where the product came from or the conditions of the factory that it was produced in πŸ€”

We then took part in a role play where we were the factory workers and had to produce 3 caps in an allocated time frame to receive our wages πŸ’°

After our caps had been quality assured by the manager we then had to decide how to spend our wages. We discussed afterwards how these choices are also the choices that workers in the fast fashion industry have to face everyday 🏭

We went on to create our Fair Factory Charters and ensured that the rights of workers would be upheld ⭐️
