Giglets – Earth Day 🌍

This morning we attended the Giglets Event for Earth day 🌍 the text β€˜Marine’ looked at our oceans and the effect that plastic pollution is having on wildlife 🐟

We created our own persuasive pieces during the presentation ✍🏼

BBC Young Reporter 2024 πŸŽ₯

We had an action packed day at the BBC Young Reporter Event at Trades Hall in Glasgow πŸŽ₯

We started off the day with a session about real or fake news with BBC Journalist Paul Brown. We looked at evidence, found names, locations and dates then looked around at other sources to whether a story was accurate.

We then heard from the author Brian Conaghan and heard all about his journey from being a painter and decorator, to teaching and then to writing his own novels. He also gave an exclusive reading of his new book ‘Treacle Town’ which is set in Coatbridge.

Next, we moved onto our making a live podcast session. We created scripts, recorded VoxPops and worked together to include music and transitions.

Finally we rounded off with an animations session followed by a Q&A from River City Executive Producer Martin and a Quiz!

Β

We also met our favourite newsround presenter Martin!

BBC Visitors πŸ—žοΈ

Today, we were very fortunate to receive special visitors from the BBC. They told the class all about their experiences, one working as a journalist, and the other working with media.

We learnt about the News Needs Wheel Β which helps to recognise different ways of looking at news to capture a range of audiences.Β

We also reflected on newspaper articles from the Mearns Marvellous Mail and considered ways we could use the wheels to follow up on our stories πŸ—žοΈΒ

Writing Biographies ✍🏼

Over the last few weeks we have been developing our writing when creating a Biography. We have learnt that these are factual recounts of a persons life and include subheadings. The class have enjoyed researching individuals of our choice and have created some excellent pieces of writing on musicians, artists, historical figures and sports people to name but a few ✍🏼

November Newspaper πŸ—žοΈ

Our first edition of the Mearns Marvellous Mail arrived this week and we have been busy selling it to other classes throughout the school 🏫

Today we had different groups organising the coins that we have collected as payment and calculating the total!

In 2 days we have raised over Β£200! A fantastic effort P6.20 πŸ“°

Persuasive Peer Reviewing ✍🏼

Today we had the opportunity to read some persuasive writing pieces from Primary 7.26. The piece was focused on Lockerbie πŸƒπŸŒ³β˜€οΈ and convincingΒ  the Primary 6’s to go next year. Β We enjoyed reading each of the persuasive letters in pairs and giving feedback πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

Class Newspaper πŸ“° & Line Points! ⭐

We had a great start to the week after we won the line points for Primary 6!

Yesterday we spent time making presentations or writing letters to apply for jobs in our class newspaper. The jobs included photographer, Editor in Chief, Journalist and the Digital Team πŸ“°

Miss Hardie encouraged us to use persuasive language to convince her why we would be suitable for the role. We had to explain the relevant skills we have and any experience that could help us be successful.
