Snowdrops’ Home Learning Activities 8th Feb

Morning Snowdrops!

How are you all? Here are some activities for you to try at home this week:

Numeracy

What day is it today? It’s Monday. Can you sign Monday?

The following song is one we use in class to learn the days of the week.
https://youtu.be/mXMofxtDPUQ

Have a go at signing Monday.

Watch the following Singing Hands song. I know a few children in the class will like this one:
https://youtu.be/x_I2ysM0w0g

Can you count the firemen? Can you say or sign the numbers?

Literacy

This week we will practise using our fine motor skills. Gather some penne pasta, buttons, cheerios or any thread-able objects and a shoelace, pipe cleaner, piece of wool (put Sellotape round the end of wool to make it easier to thread), or straws and make some necklaces or bracelets.

You could also use spaghetti stuck in playdough to practise threading.

LGBT month story:

This week, our story is called Giraffe’s Can’t Dance. Can you sign or say giraffe?

https://youtu.be/Zzb5Acl-n70

Which actions were kind and which were unkind?

Feel free to do any of the other reading or writing activities from previous weeks too.

Health & Wellbeing

This week, we’re going to try and spread our own sandwich or make a sandwich for someone else. Follow these instructions with the help of an adult:

Topic – Balamory

Archie the Inventor in Balamory, uses household objects to invent things to help people.

Here is Archie in action:

https://youtu.be/LFuHSWZCwao

Nobby is Archie’s robot assistant.

Can you use recyclable items to make your own Nobby the Robot? What other creations could you and your family make?

We thought we’d let you know about Tac Pac resources. Tac Pac sessions are sensory experiences we do in the classroom and a member of staff has put together a ‘at home Tac Pac’ kit for you to try if you think your child might benefit from it. Here is the link:

We hope you have a good week!

Remember, next Monday – Wednesday is a school holiday. 🙂

FAOL Sciences – Recycled Percussion Instruments

Effective Contributors/Successful Learners

As part of our Scottish learning activities, the Snowdrops have used recycled containers and different Scottish food textures to make percussion shakers. We found that things like lentils, split peas and macaroni are hard textures and make lots of noise when you shake them.  Everyone enjoyed sprinkling them and playing as we filled our containers.  Our Snowdrops learning at home may have made some too. The Snowdrops used their Scottish shakers during music sessions.  Great work!

Snowdrops Home Learning Activities Week 4

Good Morning!

Happy Monday to you all. We hope you are all safe and well and managing to keep positive during these difficult times.
We hope we will all be back learning together soon.

What’s the weather like today?

The following song is one we use in class. Play it and talk about the weather. Hopefully it’ll not be raining!
https://youtu.be/rD6FRDd9Hew

Literacy

This week we develop our writing skills again. Let’s try sensory writing using our finger or a stick: use shaving foam spread out on a tray or table-top or use a light dusting of flour, sand or salt.

To mark LGBT month, here is a lovely story told by Singing Hands about differences:

https://youtu.be/SdXc0iqUFfU

Feel free to do any of the other reading or writing activities from previous weeks too.

Numeracy

Counting activities:
Use a pointing finger to touch each item, for example, count how many shoes you have. Can you sort them into groups? How many have laces? How many have Velcro fastening? How many have buckles? etc.

Play the following game on Top Marks.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/teddy-numbers

Select ‘Numbers to …’ rather than ‘words…’ Hand over hand help can work here too.

Health & Wellbeing

This week you can try making your own cakes and pizzas using the My World Kitchen online game on CBeebies.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/my-world-kitchen-game

After you have made those delicious treats online, you can then have a go at washing dishes at home to help out (which is an excuse to splash about in some soapy water). You could even wipe down the kitchen surfaces or sweep the floor. I’m sure there’ll be some Snowdrops who’ll love this activity!

Outdoor Learning

When it’s cold and frosty outside, the wee birds need us to help them find food so this week we will make our own bird food to give the birds in our gardens.

Follow these links and you will find a variety of bird food ideas depending on what you have in the house:

Snowdrops Home Learning Activities Week 3

Good morning Snowdrops!

We both hope you are well and staying safe. We are missing you lots and can’t wait till you are back in the classroom with us. In the meantime, here are some fun learning activities to do at home with your parents or carers. We hope you enjoy them and if you would like to share your work with us, please feel free to take a photo and send it to kathleen.smith2@eastayrshire.org.uk.

Happy Robert Burns Day!

At this time of year, we experience lots of Scottish learning activities in class.  A fun rhyme that the Snowdrops always enjoy is ‘Roon Aboot Moose’!    It’s a fun Scottish rhyme which encourages face to face interaction, finger play and tickling!  Give it a try –

Roon a boot, roon a boot, goes the wee moose,   (Use your finger to make circling movements on your child’s feet or hands)

Up a bit, up a bit, in his wee hoose!   (Move your fingers, tapping up the body to tickle under your child’s arms)

Keep repeating rhyme for each foot and hand. Through repetition, your child will begin to anticipate your tickles!

You can also try swapping the play and let your child tickle you as the rhyme is being said. The rhyme can be watched on the Scottish book bug video link here:

https://www.scottishbooktrust.com/songs-and-rhymes/roon-aboot-moose

You could also have a go at doing the Shooglie Wooglie too: https://youtu.be/OOooKQHv9Mk

Literacy

This week have a go at sharing stories via CALL Scotland and Bookbug.

Visit this link:  www.callscotland.org.uk/files/top-10-storytime-boards/bookbug-storytime-player.pdf

There you will find a board like the picture. Each image on the board takes you to a YouTube clip of the author reading the book. You can then choose which story you’d like to listen to.

You can Download the free app SoundingBoard for your iOS device if you have an iphone/ipad. This allows you to download a set of symbolised words and recorded speech to go with each story (press the Bookbug Symbolised Resources button on board). This can help children join in and comment on the story.

You could also join in with a live Bookbug session on Friday morning at 10am. You will find it on Facebook – just ‘like’ the Bookbug page.

If you can’t wait till then, watch an old one in the Live tab or go to YouTube to see Kirstie Burns, who is a familiar face in the Snowdrops classroom.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJdWFFx0gaQswqQQZHw2new

Numeracy

For numeracy this week, we will focus on colours. Think of a colour and then go a colour hunt in your house to see which items you can find of that colour? How many objects did you find?

Health & Wellbeing

Play and relaxation is good for us. Why don’t you make a blanket fort with someone in your house and create a chill out zone? Once it is made, lay cushions on the floor and lie back and relax in your own fort. You could try and read a story or play relaxing music. Once it’s dark, shine some torches/lights on the blanket ceiling and make a relaxing light show.

We hope you have a good week!

Mrs Smith and Mrs Brown 🙂

Snowdrops’ Home Learning Activities

Good morning Snowdrops!

Mrs Smith and Mrs Brown hope you are safe and well.

Parents/carers: as before, there are 4 areas of learning activities for you to do. Please do what you can and if you’d like to take a photo of what you have been doing, feel free but definitely not a requirement. You can send your photos to kathleen.smith2@eastayrshire.org.uk

Literacy

Fine motor and writing activities:

• Some of the Snowdrops are learning to write their own names. Here’s a fun writing activity to do on a tablet. Which letters do you need for your name? Can you write them on your tablet?

Squiggling letters game (handheld device only)-
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/get-squiggling-letters-mobile

•Play dough activity: You might have shop bought dough at home, but if not you and your parent/carer could make some together. Kneading the dough will be great for hand and finger strength. Please see the recipe below if you decide to make your own.
Roll out dough and cut different shapes with cookie cutters or play dough shapes you might already have. You could also make long worm shapes and then cut them up into smaller pieces. You can also squeeze and roll the dough and make marks with your fingertips. Hand over hand from a parent/carer can help too.

Recipe suggestion: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/playdough-recipe

Numeracy

The Snowdrops love Numberblocks.  Here’s a wee activity to help recognise and count numbers to 5. If you want to try the activities to 10, feel free. Parents/carers can help if need be with hand over hand.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/numberblocks-make-and-play

Can you say or point to the numbers as they appear on screen?

Health & Wellbeing

This week, I encourage you to go for a local walk with someone from home. Before you go on your walk decide on an object/animal you are going to spot. For example: Can you spot a bird? Can you point to the bird? Can you hear it tweet or see it fly? Can you count all the birds you spot?

Or you might decide that you are going to try and spot objects that are blue. How many do you see? What kind of objects did you spot?

Have fun and remember to look and listen too!

Science/Music

Let’s make some sound jars!

Throughout the week, you could collect containers and their lids from dinners e.g. jars, takeaway tubs, tins, plastic bottles, etc.

Fill each container with different items you have in the house: pasta, rice, lentils/pulses, buttons, beads, corks, money, etc. Encourage your child to help you decide which same items go in which containers and help you to fill the containers, so they use many of their senses in this activity.

For example, one jar could have buttons in it, another could have rice and another could have lego bricks.

Questions to ask:
Which items make the loudest sound?
Which one makes the softest/most quiet sound?
Did you think of any things that were too big for the containers?

Have a shake and make some music!

Have fun!

Snowdrop Home Learning Activities

Hello Snowdrops!

We are missing you all in school and hope it won’t be long until we are all together again.  You may have your lockdown pack of activities to keep you busy, but we will also post some fun activities every week for you to try at home with adult help. The Snowdrops always enjoy learning about animals, so here are some animal related tasks.

Literacy – In class, we enjoy watching and listening to Makaton Stories.  So this week, you could look at the Dear Zoo story being told by Singing Hands.  You can also practise your Makaton animal signs.  Here is the link for you to find and enjoy watching the story at home.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoHn8rLj9pc

Numeracy – Now for some animal counting – This counting song is a Snowdrop favourite! So I’m sure there will be lots of smiles when you play this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf5lYxE0c5c

Try to say some numbers, point or simply watch all the fish appearing and moving.

HWB – Moovlee the monkey always keeps us active in class.  So, we’re going to keep thinking about animals and follow Moovlee to make animal poses and moves.

Moovlee Toddler Yoga: Animal poses

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75m2xWoFBaA

Moovlee Toddler workout: Animal moves!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvZiDxX-h48

Home Economics – We like touching, smelling and eating different fruits.  It’s also fun to make different shapes with your fruit pieces and here are some ideas for animal shapes. Ask an adult to help you.

Maybe you have some play doh at home and could make some fruit shapes with play doh too.  Can you count how many pieces of fruit you make?  Or sign and say what colour they are?

Finally – If you just want some sensory relaxation, here are some links to underwater animal relaxing music to lie or sit quietly and listen to.

Take care Snowdrops and keep checking the blogs for more learning fun activities! Hope to see you all soon, Mrs Brown/Mrs Smith

Party time in the Snowdrops

Confident Individuals/Effective Contributors

There has been lots of Christmas fun in the Snowdrops this morning!  We all met Santa in the playground and then had our party in class.  Everyone participated actively in our fun party games.  We even had some Christmas yoga which was pupil led!  Christmas snack went with a bang, as we all pulled our festive crackers.  Enjoy looking at all our photos.  The Snowdrops wish you all a very Merry Christmas, stay safe and see you next year!

FAOL Enterprise – Christmas gift

Effective Contributors/Confident Individuals

The Snowdrops showed lots of interest in handling and exploring different textures and materials to create a Christmas gift.  We also used our counting skills to add chocolates to our bags and made confident choices of colours to decorate them.  The Snowdrops had to use their fine motor skills to hold and twist pipe cleaners too.  Well done, everyone!

St Andrew’s Day in the Snowdrops Room

Responsible Citizens/Effective Contributors

The Snowdrops have showed lots of interest in Scottish activities.  We have created Scottish flags using different textures and then been able to ‘spot’ small flags on different food packaging.  Everyone enjoyed exploring Scottish foods – especially Scottish spreading cheese and oatcakes!

FAOL Whole school projects/citizenship

Confident Individuals/Effective Contributors

It’s beginning to sound and look a lot like Christmas with the Snowdrops.

We’ve been busy this week preparing our Christmas window for the atrium. We enjoyed painting and decorating our snowmen and making a Christmas tree using our handprints.

We’ve been very confident as we dressed up in Nativity costumes to learn and practise our Christmas songs and signs.
