IDL: Moana STEM Work

We had great fun this week during topic work designing and building our own Moana boat! We looked at Moana’s boat in the film and had a think about what it materials it was made of and what shape it is.  We conducted a bit of an experiment to see if the shape of the boat affected how well it could float.  We discovered that the boat with a larger base was able to carry the most weight! We were very successful learners by making our hypothesis and taking turns to count out the number of weights per boat and then deciding which boat was the best.

IDL – Superhero Careers

As part of our Heroes and Villains topic, we have explored the idea of female superheroes being a little less popular than male superheroes.  So today we read a story called ‘Charlie the Firefighter’ that told the story of a female firefighter – a real life hero who helps to rescue people in need.  We were confident individuals as we learned about lots of different jobs that people do to help others in their community.  We even thought about what our dream superhero job would be and tried on the uniform!

Successful Learners – Looking After Ourselves

The Beech pupils have been exploring different aspects of personal care this term.  This week we focused on hair care by opening our own salon enterprise!  We took turns in our small groups to explore different aspects of running a salon from dealing with hair care, to operating a till and scheduling appointment times.  We looked at lots of different products and even designed our own hair styles and colours.  We were very successful learners at each activity station.

IDL – Outdoor Learning

Over the past week, the Beech class have achieved both of our outdoor learning targets in line with our current topic.

We went on a rock hunt around the school and then used our artistic talents to paint our rocks in an Aladdin theme!

We also went outside in the sunshine this morning to read a sensory story together! Everyone took part in feeling the props for the story and we were very effective contributors.

Aladdin Themed Life Skills – Effective Contributors

As part of our Aladdin topic, we made our very own magic carpets and tiger tail snacks!  We practised spreading, cutting and mixing to make our snacks and waited very patiently for our turn to choose all of the ingredients we wanted to use.  Everyone used big voices and did some great choosing when deciding what they wanted to use to make their snacks.

World Earth Day

Effective Contributors – Responsible Citizens

To celebrate World Earth Day, the Beech class read the story ‘George Saves the World by Lunchtime’ and thought of ways that we could help save the world too! We make sure that the smart board is turned off at home time & we turn the lights off throughout the day when we don’t need them on. We created Earth stained-glass windows to shine the colours of the Earth into our classroom!
