Week ending 6th March

We are at the end of another busy week in Primary 1. We have had an exciting week with world book day celebrations.

We enjoyed taking part in a book character puppet competition and there were some fabulous entries! Ashlyn impressed us all with her winning ‘Paper Dolls’ entry.

We enjoyed listening to a story ‘Nibbles -The Book Monster’. It was read to us by Miss Kockaya who will be joining us as a student teacher in Term 4.

We then got to take part in lots of lovely activities – including illustrating the main character Nibbles!

After that, it was time to go to the hall to choose a new book to take home as part of our school ‘Book’ swap.

We then had a chance to visit Primary 2. They have written their own amazing stories which they read to us. It was such a lovely activity that we all enjoyed.

In numeracy, we have continued learning about sharing. ‘. We set up our own ‘shell shack’ and took in a sharing shells activity. We are using new vocabulary such as ‘equal’ and ‘halving’.

We have also been working on days of the week and months of the year.

Across the curriculum, took part in a STEM challenge as we tried to build a bridge. We also took part in a collaging activity based around the book ‘The Colour Monster’ as we begin to look at emotions during Health & Wellbeing.

week ending 20th Feb

This week our focus sounds were J and V. We practised recognising, saying and forming the letters. We consolidated our learning by building jets, jungles, doing jigsaws and crafting jellyfish! We also created lovely artwork of flowers in vases and used vegetables to do some printing! We also had lots of practise reading and writing words with our sound in them, as well as playing games with our common words.

In numeracy, we have started to learn about sharing. We introduced our new concept using a lovely story called ‘The Doorbell Rang’. We listened to the story and took on roles to act it out. We got to share out some delicious cookies between our characters but just when we had managed to share them out fairly…uh oh! The doorbell rang and in came some new guests! We managed to share them out again but just as we did… the doorbell rang, AGAIN!

We had so much fun taking part in this activity and enjoyed combining literacy, numeracy and drama skills! We were also able to use our learning to work together and ensure that the Gingerbread Men had a ‘fair share’ of buttons.

We have also started to learn about time. This week we had a focus on the days of the week.

This week we took part in a push experiment in science and also watched a perfomance of ‘Oliver Twist’ in the hall. What a fun week!

Week Ending 6th Feb

P1 had a lovely first week in February with lots of excitement on our trip and as usual, lots of new learning!

This week we focussed on the ‘h’ and ‘w’ sounds. We practised forming the letters and word building. We enjoyed creating headbands, hand hedgehogs, building hospitals, drawing Mrs Watt, making wands and enjoyed some Where’s Wally books!

We have been enjoying reading and writing 3 letter CVC words!

Here are a few pictures of just some of the other things we have been up to this week!

Make sure to check our previous post to find out all about about our trip!

Week ending 30th Jan

Here we are at the end of a wonderful month in Primary 1. We have been celebrating all things Scotland and this week had the chance to attend the Scots Verse Celebration. We heard all of the winners recite their poems and were especially excited to hear our P1 winner, Freddie, perform. Here is a video of Freddie performing. We are so proud of you!

In numeracy, we have continued to work on money. We have also been learning about doubling! As a class we came up with useful little prompts to help us remember the “doubles” which will help to speed up our calculations.

We have also been working on reading and writing CVC words. This week we also started reading Bug Club books in small groups. Some of us made fantastic drawings of our the character “Sid”.

We have also been busy in the gym, continuing our gymnastics block.  We got a chance to use some of our large equipment including the monkey bars and ropes! As part of Scotland topic, we have been making maps. Some of us used the blocks to make a fantastic map of a town!

Week Beginning 12th Jan

We have had a lovely week in Primary 1 with lots of new learning. We have been focussing on the ‘f’ and ‘l’ sounds. We have enjoyed making flags, designing farms, forming ‘l’ with lemon scented playdoh, making love hearts and posting letters! We have also been building and reading cvc words and making progress with our common words!

Here are the links to our Jolly Phonics songs

In Numeracy, we have continued our learning about money and subtraction. This week we worked on using a numberline to complete subtraction calculations and were very successful in our learning. Lots of us are able to independently read a calculation and use a ‘rainbow jumps’ to count backwards on the number line to find the answer. Mrs Hasson has been very impressed!

In the gym, we have continued our gymnastics block. This week we were ‘bouncing bunnies’ and were able to travel around the hall safely in various ways. We practised two footed jumps and remembered how to safely set up and put away our equipment.

Last week, we talked about our class Chromebooks and the types of things we can do with them. Lots of us said that we would like to be able to set up games and activities by ourselves. This week, we had 4 very helpful P7s who helped us set up and close the drawing programme ‘canvas’ independently.  We can’t wait to continue developing new chromebook skills!

Merry Christmas

Primary One are very excited to be heading home for the Christmas holidays after a very festive and fun filled week!

We have had another excellent term in Primary 1. There has been lots of new learning and fantastic progress. Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Hasson are extremely proud of all of our Primary 1s.

Yesterday, we headed off to the Panto to watch ‘Sleeping Beauty’. We were so excited as we headed off on the big bus and had a wonderful time.

We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a lovely New Year.

We can’t wait to see you all in 2026.

Week ending 5th December

It’s the beginning of December so this week we started to get into the Christmas spirit. We put up our class tree and decorated the classroom for Christmas!

We also got to work on making our crafts for the Christmas Fayre. We really enjoyed making our crafts, especially adding the scents and colours to our Christmas themed playdoh! The Fayre was a great success, thanks very much for coming along!

In numeracy, we have been learning about ‘the story of 5’. We have been using lots of our tools such as the rekenreks, numicon and other concrete materials. We also introduced part-part-whole models and have been using them to complete calculations.

This week we introduced the ‘c’ and ‘k’ sounds. We tried so hard to form each letter correctly and produced some very neat work. Here are some photographs of our ‘c’ and ‘k’ activities!

In health and wellbeing we have continued to learn about oral health. We know how to look after our teeth by brushing. We talked about how different types of food can impact our teeth and sorted food into categories.

We also really enjoyed the role play area and even gave each other some check ups!

Inspired by our ‘I see, I think, I wonder’ we began learning about different types of sharks. Take a look at some of our activities!

Week ending 21.11.25

This week Primary 1 got the chance to present their very first ‘Big Talk’.  We had a lovely time listening to confident presentations  about ‘My Family’. Everyone did a fantastic job and we are very proud of them!

We still have a few ‘Big Talks’ to hear next week and we are so looking forward to them!

In literacy, we have been continuing to work on our common words. We have been practising writing them, recognising them and making them out of playdough. We used our knowledge of our common words and sounding out to write some dictated sentences.

We also completed our monthly self-portrait for November. We are getting so good at adding lots of details in our drawings. Lots of us were able to write our name independently this month!

In numeracy, we continue to work on addition. We have an understanding that it doesn’t matter which way around you add, the answer will always be the same. We have been working on some ‘switcher’ calculations.

We are getting more confident using concrete materials such as numberlines, counters, tens frames and the rekenreks to add.

We have started completing ‘core’ and ‘challenge’ activities!

This week, we also held our Literacy Open Morning. We had a fantastic time completing  BookBug tasks made for us by our wonderful Primary 7 class. Here are some snaps taken on the day!

Finally, here is one last picture, taken this week whilst we were out and about in the community on a lovely frosty afternoon.

Week ending 14.11.2025

This week in literacy we have been learning about the ‘r’ and ‘m’ sounds. We have been working hard to say, make and form each sound correctly.  We consolidated our learning with lots of lovely activities. We made junk model robots, made rainbows, pictures with rulers and even went outside to launch a rocket! We made our own masks, playdoh muffins, doodled with ‘m’ and came up with some tasty meal ideas!

Here is a link to the jolly phonics rhyme and action. We really like learning these songs and find them helpful to remember our sounds.

In numeracy, we continue to work on adding. We are getting more confident using words like ‘total’ ‘altogether’ and ‘calculation’. We can use resources such as the rekenreks, numberlines and tens frame trains to help us add. Some of us are enjoying challenging ourselves to add within 20!

A reminder that next Thursday (20th November) is our Literacy Open Morning. We would love to welcome you into our classroom to take part in Literacy activities that have been organised by our brilliant P7 class.

Week Ending 07.11.25

It is the end of another busy week in Primary 1!

This week we have been consolidating our knowledge of the initial sounds covered so far (a, t, s, i, p, n) before we move onto new learning next week.

We also continued to work on our common words. We had lots of practise reading and writing them. We typed them on the computer, made them out of playdoh, did some rainbow writing on some very big paper and even managed to spot some of our common words in books from the class library.

In numeracy, we continued to work on forming numbers up to 20 and  addition. We looked at “one more and one less” using concrete materials like the cubes and used other strategies such as the number lines. We enjoyed playing partner games at our stations and enjoyed giving each other a ‘challenge’.

In writing, we did a detailed drawing of ‘I am splashing in wellies’.

Some of the detail in our drawings is improving lots and some of us even tried to write the sentence to match.  Take a look!

This week we also had a visit from the Firefighters, made fantastic firework artwork, went on a walk around the community, started a new dance topic in P.E and attended our very first ‘Discovery Dens’ where we took part in things like clay modelling and pancake making! Phew!

*note- all pupils have been sent home with a large piece of paper which can be used for Big Talk preparation/presentation*
