P2/3 Look at our literacy work

Spelling

Primary 2/3 enjoyed the sunshine today by going outdoors to practice their spelling words.

Reading

Primary 2/3 have started learning about the visualisation reading strategy.
They have been super visualisers by highlighting key words including adjectives in a piece of text which help them to create a picture in their head of what is happening.

P2/3 World Book Day

World Book Day 2022

Primary 2/3 had great fun today for World Book Day.
Lots of the pupils came in with super costumes to show their favourite characters from their favourite story.

We started our day off with a lovely surprise which was listening and watching Mrs Vivers (Oscar’s mum) reading two chapters of a wonderful book on the Promethean board. The book was called Bob and the house elves and the pupils loved listening to it then making predictions about what might happen in Chapter 3. Miss Thomson read chapter 3 and 4 to the class at the end of the day to see how accurate the predictions were. We have decided that we will get this book for the class to continue as our reading for enjoyment book since we have recently finished The Twits.

We created some fantastic bookmarks. Some pupils decided to have their name on their bookmark, some pupils decided to decorate their bookmark with details of their favourite book and some pupils decided they wanted just to decorate their bookmark with some lovely pictures. The bookmarks will be laminated once everybody has finished them and sent home tomorrow.

During assembly, Mrs Ross put together a World Book Day quiz where each class had to guess the character based on the picture clues she provided. Our class guessed ours correctly. I wonder if the parents can get it right by looking at the clue below?

We also enjoyed listening to Reverend Kim as she prepared a recording for the whole school all about World Book Day and the importance of reading.

This afternoon, we went outside to join Primary 7 with our favourite book. Primary 7 read to Primary 2/3 which the pupils loved. P7 were very responsible and welcoming when doing this which was lovely to see.

Finally, last but not least we completed a Rights Respecting Schools lesson this afternoon focusing on our Article of the Week which you can see below. We made links to World Book Day and discussed some of the points in the picture below before completing a task linked to this.

P2/3 Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

Primary 2/3 took their learning outside this morning. They started off by completing a paired scavenger hunt in the school garden looking for images which showed different parts of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch story. Then they went into the playground to place their pictures into the order in which they happened in the story. After this, they collected natural materials from the garden to create a lovely picture frame around their storyboard. Finally, a couple of the pairs shared their story board and frame with the rest of the class and discussed how they completed their final piece of work.

P2/3 – Scots language on camera :)

The Gruffalo in Scots

Please watch Primary 2/3 sharing a description of the Gruffalo in Scots language. They have had lots of fun learning different Scots words and I am sure you will agree that they have done a fantastic job in this recording!

P2/3 – Look at what we’ve been doing in class

Literacy – Reading

Today Primary 2/3 have been learning to write predictions about their reading books. They used information from the front covers to help them think about what the  book might be about before reading the book and discussing how accurate their predictions were. This was a great talking point about the famous saying ‘never judge a book by its cover’. Have a look below to read some of our predictions.

I think that my book will be fiction. I think the animals will grow food. (Finlay, P2)

I think that my book will be fiction. I think it will be about a boy that sleeps in a tree with his teddy. (Jessica, P2)

I think that my book is going to be non-fiction. I think my book is going to be about animals. (Erik, P2)

I think that my book will be non-fiction. I think my book will be about mummies. I think this book will have facts about mummies. (Eve, P3)

I think that my book will be all about mummies and Egyptians. I think that my book is non-fiction. (Olivia, P3)

P2/3 Learning Update

Primary 2/3 Learning Update

This week in Primary 2/3 we have been working really hard and lots of the pupils have really challenged themselves in their learning producing some excellent standards of work. See below for a little update about some of the things we have been learning about.

Literacy

In literacy primary 2/3 have been learning about nouns. They worked collaboratively to complete a noun hunt in the classroom and in the playground before attempting their individual tasks. Primary two were able to identify and use nouns for places, people and things. Primary three extended their learning further and learned about proper nouns and common nouns. They learned the rule that proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.
The photos below can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Numeracy

Our focus in numeracy at the moment is number and the four operations. some pupils have been creating calculations for their peers using Numicon and other pupils have been learning about the vertical written method for addition (chimney sums). All pupils have been highly engaged with this and have really impressed me with their enthusiasm and their efforts.

P2/3 Literacy – Writing

Literacy – Writing

Learning Intention (1) – We are learning to create a setting.
Learning Intention (2) – We are learning to use openers and adjectives in our writing.

I am so impressed by the writing work produced in primary 2/3 last week. We were learning about ‘setting’ and adjectives during our writing lesson to help us create our own spooky setting. Look how proud these two pupils are showing off their writing after sharing it with Mrs Davidson.
