P2/3 Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

Primary 2/3 took their learning outside this morning. They started off by completing a paired scavenger hunt in the school garden looking for images which showed different parts of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch story. Then they went into the playground to place their pictures into the order in which they happened in the story. After this, they collected natural materials from the garden to create a lovely picture frame around their storyboard. Finally, a couple of the pairs shared their story board and frame with the rest of the class and discussed how they completed their final piece of work.

P2/3 PAThS Control Signals & PAThS Pupil

PAThS Control Signals

Primary 2/3 have been learning about the PAThS control signals and how they can use these to manage their feelings to prevent them from ‘losing their temper’ and behaving in a way they might regret.

We read a story which spoke about how we all have an imaginary balloon inside us that gets filled more and more each time we feel an uncomfortable feeling such as anger or upset and once it gets too full it can burst which causes us to behave in a certain way. Usually the way we behave at this point is a ‘not okay’ behaviour and we can often regret it. Using the PAThS control signals, P2/3 have been discussing times when their imaginary balloon has burst in the past and how they reacted to this. They then discussed plans they could have made if they had known about and used the control signals to help them cope with the situation. They came up with some fantastic plans.

As always, we selected a random pupil from the class to compliment to help boost their self-esteem and build confidence.

P2/3 Outdoor Learning (IDL)

Outdoor Learning
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

As part of our IDL topic we are focusing on the book called The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. Today we took our learning outdoors and discussed the different things that Mrs Grinling included in Mr Grinlings lunches. The pupils were able to identify the healthy lunch items and the not so healthy lunch items. Following this, they learned about different vegetables that can be planted at this time of year and how they grow. Pupils then followed instructions to prepare the soil and plant seeds (runner beans, carrots and parsnips) which we will continue to look after and harvest closer to the summer.

The pupils also had excellent fun using the mud kitchen to retell different parts of the story. Some pupils made coffee and peach surprise just like Mrs Grinling did for Mr Grinling.

‘Go and get more water for his coffee!’
‘We are going to make the best peach surprise ever for Mr Grinling.’
‘We need fruit for our peach surprise. Look at this!’

P2/3 Fantastic fractions

Fantastic Fractions in Primary 2/3

Primary 2/3 have had fun recently when learning about fractions. Have  a look below for a snapshot of some of the activities they have participated in.

The Circles and Triangles group were creating fractions using the blocks. They had to represent the whole on the bottom row by using the denominator to know how many blocks were required then they were to represent the numerator on top. Some pupils extended their learning by writing their own fractions then representing these using the blocks. Lots of successful learners in this.

The pupils write a list of toppings they would like on their pancakes. They wrote what fraction of their pancake they would cover with each topping then put it all together. What a fun activity it was and even better when they got to eat their marvellous creations.
