This term we have focused on Instructional Writing.
We have written for a wide variety of purposes and learned about rhetorical questions, imperative(bossy)verbs, time openers and bullet points.
For our final piece of writing , we read How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss. We then wrote the instructions for stealing Christmas – Grinch Style!
We had great fun adding illustrations and warnings to our writing.
We watched The Grinch film as a reward for our ambitious writing and Mr Houston sent some sweet treats for us all.
On Wednesday we took part in a reading challenge with other schools across Scotland. We all took time in class to read books written by Scottish authors or about Scotland.
We really enjoyed this challenge and were amazed to hear that 12,605 pupils across Scotland 🏴 took part in this record breaking reading challenge !
This afternoon we walked in the sunshine to Hallhouse Care Home. The residents had been looking forward to our visit and were all ready for us in their lounge.
Some of the class felt nervous about reading and did not not know what to expect but once we introduced ourselves and sat down to read our nerves disappeared and everyone read beautifully.
We all agreed that it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon and Claire from the care home told us that we had put a smile on everyone’s face. Mrs Ross and Mrs Moore were very proud of us all.
We are looking forward to going back down soon and sharing our reading again.
Paired Reading We have been sharing our love of reading with other classes. We have been role models to younger pupils sharing our enthusiasm to read as we build a reading culture within our school.
Today we were very excited to have an opportunity to choose a book from East Ayrshire’s mobile library van. Mrs Sweeney organised this visit for us as part of our journey to become a Reading School.
We were amazed by the selection of books in the van. Everyone took their time to look at the covers, read the blurbs and then help each other to choose. These books will stay in school.
Afterwards, we spent some time in the shelter exploring our books and sharing the titles we had chosen with each other. We can’t wait for our next visit and to choose another book in a couple of weeks time.
This week we have finished reading Danny Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. We all agreed that we have loved this story and laughed at lots of the funny incidents that happened and all of the crazy characters.
We created Dodecahedron Book Reviews with everyone adding different information. We wrote about the main characters, favourite chapters, new title ideas and created new covers for the book.
We hope that they might inspire others to read this novel.
We think they look great on our wall display. Lots of classes and teachers have been asking us all about them. We hope that some parents might look at them on Parents Evening.
