P4/5 Reading Visit to Hallhouse Care Home

Reading to our Hallhouse Buddies

After a very busy first week back after the holidays, we enjoyed a walk in the sunshine to Hallhouse.

The residents welcomed us again and we enjoyed sharing our new Bug Club novels with everyone.

The staff enjoyed listening too and made us all a drink of juice before our walk back to school.

Everyone always enjoys our visits and we all end up with a huge smile on our faces.

P4/5 World Book Day

World Book Day

What a busy, booktastic day, with some fantastic costumes from our class.

Book Swap

First thing this morning we visited the hall to choose books from the book swap tables. Everyone was delighted with their new books and couldn’t wait to get back to class to enjoy them.

Book Scavanger Hunt

Next we followed the clues around the school to solve the book puzzles and discover the letter combination.

Ilaria was delighted to win the book prize.

Guess Who

Next we scoured the photos of staff from their childhood along with a picture of their favourite book. Everyone in p4/5 found Mrs Ross on her first day at primary school with her huge bag  and copy of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

Jim was the best detective and worked out who 6 of the staff were!

Author Visit

The final treat before lunch was a visit frim the children’s  author, Rachel McGaw. She read her story The Unicorn in the Castle and then we were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of her brand new unreleased book.

P4/5 Compass Points

Compass Points

We have been learning the names of the 8 compass points .

We have used this knowledge to find locations on the map of Orkney and to help us understand some of the locations in our class novel.

Today we took our learning outdoors and used compasses  to  find  where north is in our playground and then we located  the other 7points on the compass.

We then gave  and followed directions to navigate the playground.

Not even the rain could stop us enjoying this task !

P4/5 Reading at Hallhouse

Reading Visit to Hallhouse Care Home

Today we walked in the sunshine to Hallhouse Care Home to read to the residents.
In class this morning, we chose a book and then made postcards to give to all the residents to  let them know how much we love to read.
We had a lovely afternoon sharing our reading, spreading joy and sharing a smile with everyone we met.
All the staff commented on what lovely, polite children we are and how kind and respectful we are.
We are happy to demonstrate our school values wherever we go.

P4/5 Writing

How to Steal Christmas

This term we have focused on Instructional Writing.

We have written for a wide variety of purposes and learned about rhetorical questions, imperative(bossy)verbs, time openers and bullet points.
For our final piece of writing , we read How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss. We then wrote the instructions for stealing Christmas – Grinch Style!

We had great fun adding illustrations and warnings to our writing.
We watched The Grinch film as a reward for our ambitious writing and Mr Houston sent some sweet treats for us all.

Have a read at our fabulous work!

P4/5 Class Library Refresh

Today everyone had the chance to choose some new books for our class library.

The Reading Schools Committee  sent us a box of donated books for us to have a look through and choose to restock our class library. Mrs Ross had also been to a charity shop and chosen some books for us to look through too.

Everyone found some new authors and titles to try.
We were also delighted to find that the mobile library had also listened to some of our requests and ordered in some animal books and escape room books for us to read in class.
