Transition Literacy Afternoon
Well done to our P6 buddies who organised a super literacy transition event for our ECC children.
The children had a great time on their first visit up to the ‘big school’ and enjoyed all the activities that their buddies had set up.
Spring Disco
A huge thank you again to the Parent Council for organising a super Spring Disco. As you can see in the photos, we had a great time dancing the night away, playing games and enjoying our sweeties from the tuck shop.
DJ Billy had lots of prizes to give away too.
Lapraik Festival – Saturday 29th March
The annual Lapraik Festival took place on 28th & 29th March.
The event is named in honour of Muirkirk poet and friend of Robert Burns, John Lapraik, and is a celebration of poetry, song and Scots language.
The event on the Saturday morning was for pupils of the local schools who were winners in their own school.
Catrine PS was represented by Harris P5, with his poem ‘Social Dancin’ by Anne Kelly.
We are delighted to say that Harris won 1st place in his age category.
A massive well done, Harris.
Report Cards and Parents Night
All of our pupils have been given their annual Report Card today and I hope you are as proud reading about your child and their progress as we were writing about them! EVERY child in our school has made progress with their own personal learning targets this year and it has been a pleasure to watch them flourish and grow.
The report cards summarise what our pupils have been working on throughout year and also highlights their future learning targets.
We are looking forward to discussing your child’s progress further at our Parents Night next Tuesday, 1st April.
Have a lovely weekend. Mrs Govans 🙂
Remarkable Reader
We are proud as punch of Ashton in P5 who was awarded a Blue Peter Book badge. He had to read and review multiple books and then apply for the badge online. What a fantastic achievement!

Our Vision, Values and Aims
Catrine PS Vision, Values and Aims – the three parts summarise our goals, priorities and standards for everything we do in Catrine PS.
In consultation with pupils, parents/carers, staff and the wider school community, we have reviewed and updated our Vision, Values and Aims over the past couple of years.
We are proud to highlight our new posters which are displayed all around our school building. In our weekly assemblies and monthly Home Circles, we regularly discuss our Vision, Values and Aims to ensure our pupils have a sound understanding of our high standards and expectations.
Our School Captains – Eli, Lucy, Lenore and Hannah – will be happy to have a blether with you about our updates at Parents Night next Tuesday, 1st April.

March Home Circles
The whole school participated in our Home Circles and we focused on our last CATRINE Value of Excellence.
We also focused on Article 28 of the UNCRC which states that ‘children and young people have the right to education on matter who they are: regardless of race, gender or disability’.
Our BIG questions were….
- Why is it important that we have Values, Class Charters and Respectful Relationships guidelines in our school?
- What would happen if the Values, Charters and guidelines aren’t followed?
Read our very detailed and responsible answers below. 🙂

EAST AYRSHIRE Climate Change Champion
Alfie in P6 is officially a superstar!
On Wednesday night he attended a star-studded awards ceremony at the Park Hotel in Kilmarnock, as he was nominated in the category of EAC Climate Change Champion – and he won!!
Alfie represents our true CATRINE Values on a daily basis and we agree with all that was said at the awards event about his committment and dedication to improving both our school and village environment.
Well done, Alfie – from everyone at Catrine PS x

Power Down Assembly
We held an assembly to present our hard work on our whole school ‘Power Down’ challenge. Power Down aims to educate pupils on sustainable energy use. We are learning about sustainable energy through monthly class challenges. We presented these during our assembly:
- October – Primary 6 investigated the pros and cons of renewable energy sources in small groups and then debated their effectiveness
- November – Primary 1 watched videos about how to save energy at school and at home. They made ‘Switch Off the Light’ cards to signpost around the school
- December – Primary 3 investigated how they could save energy at school and at home during Christmas. They referred to Windy’s energy saving tips to help
- January – Primary 2 investigated wind energy using online resources and made their own windmills
- February – Primary 4 looked at water usage and ways to save water. They created posters to share their message
- April – Primary 5 will create energy saving checklists for each class
- May – Primary 7 are going to explore green jobs in relation to their World of Work topic
This month we invited along Vicky McWilliam and Windy the Windmill to attend our assembly. As well as listening to our presentation, Vicky McWilliam also invited everyone to join in on ‘Windy’s Earth Hour’. We will complete this challenge on Friday in school where we will ‘power down’ and turn off electrical devices for an hour in a bid to save energy. We would also like to invite you at home to participate in Earth Hour sometime this weekend. Why not spend an hour playing games, going outside and having fun together!
Have fun powering down!
