CATRINE Values – logo competition

Welcome back to the start of Term 3.  We’re kicking off this very busy term by asking for your help.

At the beginning of this session, after consultation with pupils, staff, parents and carers, we updated our school and ECC values.

We now have our CATRINE Values –

C – Community

A – Achievement

T – Teamwork

R – Respect

I – Inclusion

N – Nurture

E – Excellence

We’re asking for your help in designing a logo which contains the words CATRINE Values and what each letter stands for.  The winning design will be made into a poster by the EAC Print Room and will be displayed around the school and incorporated into our school stationery.

We are NOT replacing our school badge – the lovely image of the Catrine Wheel will still be on our school jumpers and polo shirts; we are looking for a design for our CATRINE Values.

Logo entries are welcomed from creative folk of all ages – you can either hand in entries on paper to the main office or take photos of your design and email them to judith.govans@east-ayrshire.gov.uk.

The finished poster will be A4 size so we’re looking for a bright, colourful and clear poster which makes our CATRINE Values very easy to read and understand.

Thanks in advance for your help – I can’t wait to see your wonderful entries.  All entries to be in by Friday 26th January please.  Please contact the school for further information.  Mrs Govans

Best Wishes – End of Term 2

What a quick term – it has flown in!

At our Christmas Service on Wednesday, our Parent Council Chair, Dawn, and Treasurer, Ashley, drew out two names to win a £25 Smyths Toys voucher from the Parent Council.

Congratulations to Nadia and Rhys, both from P2/3

Make sure to click on the Sway links to watch our wonderful infant nativity ‘This Way to Bethlehem’ and our ukulele group performance.  We are so proud of all of our pupils for their great efforts.

We close today at 2.30pm – after a whole school Christmas Quiz in the hall – and I look forward to seeing everyone on 8th January.

Wishing all our Catrine friends and family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Take care, Mrs Govans

Rights Respecting School @ December Home Circles

In our December Home Circles we highlighted Article 17 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child which states that every child has the right to reliable information from a range of sources, and governments should encourage the media to provide information that children can understand.  Governments must help protect children from materials that could harm them.

Our questions were –

How do you find out what is happening in your community and in the world? What kinds of social media do you use?

Why is it important that there are rules about using social media sites?

Take a look through our answers in our Home Circle jotters …

Homework Consultation

At our Parents Night in October, we asked parents/carers for their views on Homework – and the comments confirmed our thoughts that there is a very wide range of opinions on the benefits and necessity of homework coming home from school.

As a staff we value your input and will take all of your suggestions and comments into consideration as we continue to review our homework policy and provision.  We will, as always, update you with any changes.

Please have a read through the collated comments, and thanks to everyone who contributed their thoughts.  Mrs Govans

Literacy morning

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Literacy Open Morning today, despite the horrible weather!

Our pupils and staff really enjoyed showing off their Literacy learning and we hope you had a great time looking at our work and displays.

P1, P2 and P3 pupils were presented with their Bookbug and Read, Write, Count book bags – we’re sure you’ll have a lovely time reading and learning together at home.

Thanks to Captains Georgia and Marley for the photos 🤩

Rights Respecting School @ September Home Circles

In our September Home Circles we highlighted Article 12 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child which states that every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously.  This right applies at all times: during immigration proceedings, housing decisions or the child’s day to day home life.

Our questions were –

When is your opinion listened to in Catrine PS? When is your voice heard?

Why is it important that your opinion is listened to?  Why should your voice be heard?

Have a read through our answers from our Home Circles jotters …

Rights Respecting School @ November Home Circles

In our Home Circles today we focused on Article 3 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child which states that the best interests of the child must be a top priority in all decision and actions that affect children.

Today’s questions were:

Who is involved in making decisions which affect you in school and at home?

Why are these people involved in making decisions which affect you?

Check out our Home Circle answers below!

Well done!

A huge well done to Caleb and Curtis in P6 who have both been chosen to play for the East Ayrshire District Primary School Football Team this year.

Both boys have attended three trials and have made it through the rigorous selection process.  We are very proud of them both and look forward to hearing about their games with the EAC team.

A great start to Term 1

  • And we’re back! We’ve had a lovely, settled start to our new term with our pupils all looking very smart in their Catrine PS uniform.
  • A special Well Done to our new Primary 1 pupils who have settled in so quickly. P1 pupils are in from 9.30am to 2.30pm today and tomorrow, and will be in full time from Wednesday 23rd
  • Our playgrounds are supervised from 8.45am every morning.
  • Most pupils have brought in their PE bag, which can be left in school, and should contain their PE kit of plain shorts and appropriate gym shoes. No football colours or logos please. Your child’s PE timetable will be put on their class blog over the next couple of days.
  • PLEASE remember to label all of your child’s belongings – our Lost Property basket is always overflowing with unclaimed jumpers and cardigans!
  • Remember to order your child’s lunch via Parentpay for each school week to ensure they get their first choice at lunchtime. It would be great if you could order with your child so they know what they are getting for lunch each day.
  • Pupils are encouraged to drink water throughout the school day, so bottles of water (not juice or fizzy drinks please) are allowed in our classes. Please label your child’s bottle.
  • Please also be reminded that the streets around Catrine PS are ‘School Streets’ and that parents/carers should not be using them at drop off and pick up times for the safety of all of our pupils and wider community. We would appreciate your continued support and observance of this legal requirement.
  • We’re looking forward to welcoming our parents/carers and families into our school to share the wonderful learning and teaching that’s taking place at Catrine PS so look out for dates of Open Mornings and family events.

End of Term 4 Thanks

As we close today for the summer holidays, there’s some special people who deserve a big THANK YOU!

Thank you to … the parents, family and friends of our  Catrine PS pupils for your constant support of everything we do.  It makes a huge difference to know we have your backing in our efforts to continuously improve the learning and teaching experiences for your children.

Thank you to … the Parent Council for giving up their own time to arrange wonderful events for our pupils, and for their advice and support in moving our school forward

Thank you to … #Team Catrine staff – our teachers, Classroom Assistants, Senior Clerical, Catering and Cleaning staff – who all work so hard to ensure Catrine PS is a supportive, nurturing, clean, safe and wonderful learning environment.  It’s truly a team effort to keep a school continuously improving and every member of staff is a vital part of our collective school group.

Thank you to … our Catrine PS pupils.  From Primary 1 to Primary 7, our pupils motivate us every day.  They are kind, smart, funny, loud, creative, clever, hardworking, noisy, friendly, messy, inventive, cheeky – all the things that happy children should be and we think the world of them.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer break.  Good luck to our P7 Leavers – reach for the stars as you start your RBA journey.

We look forward to welcoming everyone, especially our new Primary 1 pupils, on Monday 21st August.

Take care. Mrs Govans x

Whole school trip to Glasgow Science Centre

What a brilliant day the whole school had during our visit to Glasgow Science Centre on Monday. P1-4 pupils enjoyed a trip to The Planetarium, and P5-7 pupils watched a 3D movie called ‘Our Beautiful Planet’ on Scotland’s largest IMAX screen. We all loved exploring the three floors of science activities, games, puzzles and interactive exhibits.  Lots of comments from pupils about wanting to organise a return visit soon!

P6 Big Sleepover – a brilliant night!

Thanks to all staff, pupils and parents who helped ensure our 13 P6 pupils had a wonderful Big Sleepover experience last Friday.

We tidied up our school gardens, painted stones for display around the school grounds, played games such as skipping and Peevers/Beds (Hopscotch) and a fiercely competitive game of Rounders!

After a supper of hotdogs and marshmallows around the campfire, everyone was in their tents for 10.00pm – although they didn’t fall asleep for quite a while after that ….

Special thanks to Zac’s dad and Ewan’s mum, Mrs Schendel, Mrs Ferguson, Miss Murdoch, Miss Brown and EAC LOST Team – we’re already booked up for next year!       Mrs Govans

Home Circles

The whole school were involved in our first Home Circles session since March 2020 this week.

Each house – Avalon, Ayrbank, Marneil and Whiteflat – is split into four small groups, made up of pupils from all stages, and we all have a BIG question to focus on.  Our P7 pupils are in charge of each Home Circle and they make sure that every pupil – from P1 to P7 – has a chance to voice their opinion and give their answers.

March’s BIG question was based on Article 31 of the UNCRC and is part of our Rights Respecting School focus.

  • Why is it so important for us to be able to play?
  • How do you like to spend your free time?
  • Who do you spend your free time with?

We collate all of the answers and it helps us to make changes and improvements to our indoor and outdoor learning environments.
