👮♀️📱 Staying Safe Online with PC Walker 📱👮♀️
Our P5–7 pupils had a very important visit from PC Shannon Walker from our local police this week, who came along to talk to the children about social media and keeping themselves safe online. ❤️
The session gave pupils lots of opportunities to discuss the different ways they use technology and social media, as well as some of the risks they may come across. We were really impressed by how knowledgeable our pupils already were about online safety, with lots of sensible contributions about protecting personal information, knowing who they are communicating with and what to do if something online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable. 📱💻
One particularly important part of the discussion focused on group chats. PC Walker spoke to the children about how quickly problems can develop within group conversations and how messages, comments or images can sometimes lead to arguments, exclusion, unkind behaviour or bullying. The pupils discussed the importance of thinking carefully before posting or responding, remembering that messages can be shared or screenshotted, and knowing when to step away and speak to a trusted adult.
There were lots of excellent questions and points raised throughout the session, helping our pupils think not only about how to keep themselves safe, but also about the responsibility we all have to treat others respectfully online. 🌟
Learning how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly is such an important part of growing up, and opportunities to hear directly from people such as our local police really help to reinforce the messages we teach in school.
A huge thank you to PC Shannon Walker for taking the time to visit St Joseph’s and for delivering such an informative, engaging and worthwhile session for our P5–7 pupils. 👏❤️
