🌿🧺 P5–7 Basket Weaving for the Community 🧺🌿

This week, our P5–7 pupils enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of basket weaving as part of an exciting community arts project.

Working with large steel frames and natural willow branches, pupils helped create impressive sculptures inspired by our local coastal heritage, including oysters and oyster knives. It was a completely new experience for many of the children, and they quickly discovered that weaving willow requires patience, teamwork and plenty of problem-solving!

Throughout the afternoon, pupils worked together to carefully weave the willow through the frames, learning techniques to strengthen and shape the sculptures. There was lots of collaboration, communication and perseverance as they supported one another and shared ideas to achieve the best results. 🌟

It was wonderful to see the children contributing to a project that will become part of the wider community. The finished sculptures will be proudly displayed in the town, helping to celebrate our local heritage and connections to the sea.

πŸ‘€ Keep an eye out for your children’s work, especially during this year’s Oyster Festival!

Projects like this help pupils see how art can bring people together and make a positive contribution to the local area. It was a fantastic opportunity to work alongside members of the wider community and be part of something that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

A huge thank you to Creative Stranraer for providing this wonderful opportunity and inspiring our pupils to get involved in such a unique and meaningful project. We can’t wait to see the finished sculptures on display! 🌿πŸ¦ͺ
