🌿 Taking Our Maths Learning Outdoors! ➗📊
This week our P5–7 pupils took their numeracy learning outside for an active and engaging lesson focused on division and fractions. The playground became our classroom as pupils worked collaboratively in groups to explore mathematical ideas in different ways.
🔢 Learning Through Movement and Teamwork
Each group had a different learning focus and task:
- Division Group: Pupils used stones and chalk to physically share numbers into equal groups. This helped them visualise division and understand how remainders work when numbers cannot be shared exactly.
- Fractions of Amounts Group: Using QR codes and iPads, pupils moved around the playground to scan fraction challenges. They then worked together to solve the problems and represent their thinking using drawings and models.
- Fraction Relay Group: In a fast-paced relay activity, teams collected fraction cards and worked together to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. They had to prove their answers by drawing models and explaining their reasoning before their team could move on.
🤝 Learning Together
Pupils showed great teamwork throughout the lesson. They supported one another by discussing strategies, explaining their thinking and checking answers together. This peer discussion helped deepen understanding and build confidence.
🧠 Thinking Like Mathematicians
By the end of the lesson, pupils were able to see connections between the different tasks. They recognised that division plays an important role in many fraction problems, and that drawing models or using objects can help us understand mathematical ideas more clearly.
🌳 Why Outdoor Learning?
Taking our maths learning outdoors allowed pupils to move, collaborate and think creatively while applying their knowledge in practical ways. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm for problem solving!
We finished the lesson with a short reflection where pupils shared what strategies helped them most and what they felt more confident about.
Well done everyone for your fantastic effort and teamwork! 👏
