Child Protection Coordinators (CPCs) play a critical leadership role in ensuring that safeguarding and child protection practice across schools and early learning and childcare (ELC) settings is robust, consistent and responsive to the needs of children and young people. In Dumfries and Galloway, professional learning for CPCs is designed as a continuous, role-specific and multi-agency entitlement, moving beyond episodic training towards sustained development of expertise and professional judgement.
This includes access to regular authority-wide updates, termly CPC network meetings, and a structured programme of learning that supports coordinators to strengthen their understanding of statutory responsibilities, thresholds for intervention, and effective decision-making. Professional learning is underpinned by national guidance and local procedures, ensuring CPCs are confident in leading practice within their settings and supporting staff to recognise, record and respond to concerns effectively.
A key feature of the model is the re-establishment of multi-agency learning in partnership with social work, health and police, enabling CPCs to build shared understanding of roles, responsibilities and processes, and to respond more effectively to increasingly complex safeguarding issues such as online harm, contextual safeguarding and neglect.
Through this approach, CPCs are supported to lead a culture where safeguarding is recognised as everyone’s responsibility, embedded in everyday practice, and focused on improving outcomes for children and young people through early identification, effective intervention and strong partnership working.
Annual Child Protection and Safeguarding Refresher Training
As part of the August In-Service (INSET) programme, all school staff across Dumfries and Galloway Council will receive the Child Protection PowerPoint presentation.
Mandatory training (requires GLOW Login)
This training provides an overview of key child protection responsibilities, procedures and expectations for all staff.
A recorded version of the presentation will be made available for any new, temporary or supply staff who are unable to attend the live session or who join the school after the August INSET.
