Food For Thought
On Monday 6th November, Mrs Farquhar took a group of S3/4 pupils to “Food For Thought” at Easterbrooke Hall in Dumfries. Funding from Education Scotland provided a chance to experience working in a real-life restaurant, and training in carrying out front-of-house duties.
Events Manager Fiona Grand gave the pupils a tour of Easterbrooke and Neuros Restaurant as well as the spa and swimming pool. Pupils were divided into three groups. One group had to make “mocktails” in their own bar, another group went to the kitchen to work with the chef and make a variety of foods. The final group had to lay and decorate the tables. Each group had the chance to experience each activity. One of the groups made pizza with the chef, which we ate for lunch along with sweet potato fries. It was a great experience for the pupils to learn about all the different jobs in the food and drinks industry. One pupil said, “I didn’t realise there was a restaurant inside Easterbrooke.” Another said, “The food was great, especially the chocolate mousse.”
Devil’s Porridge Trip
On Friday 3rd November, Dalry S2s went to the Devil’s Porridge Museum near Gretna. This was to follow up on their topic, World War I. They were allowed to hold replica rifles and revolvers – “It was enjoyable”, said one S2 pupil, and “The most interesting part was the Gretna Girls, who made the munitions.” Their skin turned yellow from the chemicals, which is why they were called “the Canary Girls”.

Teenage Cancer Trust Coffee Morning
On the 11th of October the S2’s held a coffee morning to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The event was a success, raising £425 for the charity. The event was really well supported by the local community despite the bad weather. We would like to extend our thanks to all those who attended. With special thanks to Lorna Wilson who kindly baked a wonderful cake for the raffle and also to W Bone’s Garage, Tesco and the CO-OP for their generous raffle donations.
