Primary 1 & 2 Fairyland Celebration of Learning

On Wednesday 20th November, Primary 1 & 2 welcomed their families in school to see the hard work they have been doing since the start of the school year. Back in August, the children received a letter from a friendly dragon who needed their help to rebuild Fairyland after it had been lost. The children have been working hard to grow beanstalks, build castles, look after the 3 Bears house and the gingerbread house as well as writing letters to the dragon and reading lots of fairy tales. The result of all their hard work was their classrooms being transformed in to Fairyland! As you can see from the photographs, children and adults alike had great fun reading books, sharing work, making sweetie houses and decorating gingerbread people as well as building castles and making friends for our friendly dragon.  All the teachers are extremely proud of how hard the children have been working.

Primary 6 visit to Crochmore Farm

Primary 6 visited Crochmore Farm near Crocketford this morning as part of their topic about the journey of food which had been organised through Fiona Jamieson from RHET. I will post more photos next week but thought the class would like you to know that during our visit, a cow was giving birth and the calf arrived shortly after we had left. Angus Kerr, the farmer, asked the children to name the new calf and they chose Andrew. Here are the photos Angus sent us this afternoon.

Primary 6 Pope Francis Faith Award Project 2018

Primary 6 would like to thank all of the pupils who spent their money for our fundraising for The Smile of Arran Trust. After a visit from Mrs Alison Tosh (Arran’s Mum), we knew exactly how we could raise money for the trust. Over the last term we have worked together as a class to organise, plan, rehearse and perform an entertainment show where were 12 pupils with acts including singers, dancers, comedians, a poet and a guitarist entertained the school and P6 parents and family. All acts were amazing, a big well done and thank you. The last song we sang, Hey Soul Sister, was inspired by Arran as we watched a video of him performing the song at Yeldham’s Got Talent. We also sold Smile of Arran merchandise, organised a raffle including prizes from local businesses and sold treats after school. Over this term we raised a whopping £535.50!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

We would also like to say a special thank you to all shops who donated raffle prizes; Wickes, Dalscone, Molly Mays, Knox Sports, Sport Direct, Holywood Trust and Waterstones.

Everyone in P6 had their part to play from publicity, planning, sourcing prizes to performing and counting money.

Mrs Barnett is extremely proud of all the hard work the class put in without much help from her!

Primary 6 Cooking at St. Joseph’s College

Primary 6 visited the newly refurbished HE department at St. Joseph’s College where they were given the opportunity to make fruit kebabs and pancakes and then eat what they had made. All the children enjoyed the experience which covered outcomes involving food hygiene, cleanliness and safety in the kitchen and preparing and tasting different food. Mrs Chalk and Miss Farrell were fantastic hosts and were impressed with how well the children behaved. S3 and S5 pupils were also there to help the children make the most of their experience.

P6 & P7 Talk from PC Trosh

On Wednesday 16th May, PC Trosh came to talk to Primary 6 & Primary 7 about Alcohol and Substance Misuse. PC Trosh gave a very informative talk about the different types of legal and illegal drugs, the effects these can have on people and what to do if the children see or find anything suspicious. The children listened attentively and asked pertinent questions.

PC Trosh also spoke separately to Primary 7 about  how drugs are portrayed in the media,  dealing with peer pressure and making good choices and as they embark on their transition to Secondary.

Mini Bridge Competition Glasgow

Twelve pupils from Primary 6 and Primary 7 travelled to St. Andrew’s Bridge Club in Glasgow to participate in a Mini Bridge competition against schools from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayr and Troon. All children played very well and finished 4th, 13th & 14th, a fantastic result. The children enjoyed the experience and Mr & Mrs Thomson (Loreburn Bridge Club) and Mrs Barnett were extremely proud of the way the children conducted themselves both on the bus journey and throughout the competition. Well Done everyone.

Primary 6 Celebration of Learning

On Thursday 22nd February, Primary 6 welcomed their families in to class to share their work. The children planned a busy afternoon where the work on show included Samson Maths, Art techniques and French. The children shared what they had learned during their mini topic on the Winter Olympics and had compiled a general knowledge quiz to test the adults. Mr & Mrs Thomson from Loreburn Bridge Club were there to demonstrate what the children had been learning in their mini bridge lessons and then the adults were given the opportunity to ‘have a go’ alongside the children. Their amazing creative homework was also on display for everyone to enjoy. As if that wasn’t enough, everyone was encouraged to join in the Around the World game Tyra had prepared and solve the Chuck Close style puzzle of Robert Burns that the children had created with Mrs Kerr. The children worked very hard to organise and run the event. The feedback forms filled in at the end show how just how much the adults enjoyed it too. Well Done P6!
