The Journey to Gold

The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA), an initiative by UNICEF UK, is a rigorous program that puts the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s ethos. The Gold Award is the highest level, demonstrating a deep and lasting commitment to children’s rights. It’s a journey that typically takes several years, starting with the Bronze and Silver awards, and involves a whole-school transformation. For a school to achieve this, it must prove that children’s rights are not just taught in lessons but are truly embedded in every aspect of school life—from the curriculum to playground behaviour and community relationships.

A Rights-Respecting Culture

Achieving the Gold Award means Sunnyside has created a culture where every member of the community, both children and adults, understands and respects their own rights and the rights of others. This is seen in a number of ways:

  • Student Empowerment: Children are actively involved in decision-making through school councils and committees, ensuring their voices are heard and valued.
  • Positive Relationships: A focus on rights, such as the right to be safe and respected, leads to improved behaviour, reduced bullying, and a more inclusive and nurturing environment.
  • Global Citizenship: Students develop a strong sense of social justice and a desire to take action for a better world. They become advocates for fairness, both locally and globally.

By achieving the Gold Award, Sunnyside is recognized as a place where children are not just learning, but thriving, as confident, compassionate, and active citizens.
