17th – 21st September

Hello.

The weather has been a bit wet and blustery outside but that ha snot dampened our joy in P1F.

We have had a fantastic week of learning and we are making really good progress in so many areas.

Our current topic is all about ‘Toys, games and Play’

This week we identified that use electricity – battery or mains and those that do not and discussed the similarities and differences.

We also learned about the history of LEGO  the man who first designed it and how it has developed over the years to what we use today.

We had a great time constructing different things out of LEGO and sharing our inventions with one another.

We have been learning how to blend the sounds M, A, S, D, and T to  make 3 letter words. We are becoming good at hearing all the sounds and writing down the letters.

In our number work we have been learning to order numbers to 5, 10 and even 20.

We have just started learning how to use a tens frame to help us recognize numbers and amounts quickly.

We hope you have enjoyed hearing about some of what we have been up to this week.

Electricity

Today we are learning about toys that use electricity. We had a vote to see what kind of toys we prefer.

9 people prefer to play with toys that use electricity.

7 people prefer to play with toys that do not use electricity.

4 people like both the same.

We talked about our favourite toys and whether or not they use electricity.

Thea “Baby Annabelle has electricity.”

Millie B “My Baby Annabelle has electricity too.”

Heather “Cat Boy makes noises, he has electricity”

Mya “I love my two bears, Marshall and Teddy  they don’t use electricity.”

Oscar “I love playing with my police helicopter. It uses electricity.”

Noah “I play with my fire engines are they have batteries inside them.”

James “I like playing with my toys in bed when it’s dark, I like playing with Lego. Lego doesn’t have electricity.”

Orla “I like playing with Barbie on my bike. She has no electricity.”

10th -14th September

Wow, we are nearly half way through September!!!

The colour of the leaves are beginning to change and there is a cooler breeze that sweeps across our skin.

Here in P1F we are continuing on our learning journey. This week we have learnt a new sound. it is ‘T’ . we are all making good progress with recognizing the sounds we have learnt . Very soon we will be making reading CVC words that can be made up from these sounds.

We enjoy our daily mile and this week a lady bug was found and some girls placed it carefully amongst the flower beds outside our classroom

On Thursday we enjoyed reading books. It was our cuddle on the couch day. Parents you are most welcome to come and spend time with your child between 9 – 9.30 reading stories together

We have been learning about looking after our environment thinking about ways we can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We linked our ideas to our current topic on ‘Toys, Games and Play’ and  we  have recycled our milk bottles and are in the process of making toys/puppets from them. It is exciting stuff!!

Have a great weekend.

3rd September – 7th September

Welcome everyone.

It was great to see such a good turn out to our meet the teacher night. At the end of this blog is a copy of our ‘Term 1’ news letter.

This week we had a visit from the Dental Nurse. She spoke to us about looking after our teeth. As from Monday we will be cleaning our teeth on a daily basis.

We had great fun using our bodies to create different shapes.

I hope you find the following information useful.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

General Information:

We hope you all had a lovely summer holidays, P1 have settled in well into their new classroom and routines.  This term Primary 1 will receive Music from the Expressive Arts team but should still bring a painting shirt as Art will take place within the class.   Brand new Red Communication poly pockets have been distributed to every child.  We ask you look out for these in your child’s school bag as it will have information about homework and be used for other school communication.

Homework will be issued on a Monday and should be completed by Thursday.  There will be a selection of Numeracy and Literacy activities and occasionally topic related tasks.

Please ensure your child has an appropriate snack kept separately from their lunch.   Your child should also have a clearly labelled water bottle everyday which is filled with plain water prior to arriving at school.  Please ensure your child has a labelled weather appropriate jacket as there will be outdoor learning opportunities.

You will be able to follow what we have been doing in class each week by looking at our class blog. This can be accessed via the link on our class page on the school website.

Family Learning Journals

Family Learning Journals will be issued prior to Parents’ Evening and will contain one piece of Literacy, Numeracy, Topic and a piece of work chosen by your child.  This will give you an opportunity to see a snapshot of your child’s learning.

Class Dojo

To promote positive behaviour Primary 1 are using Class Dojo.  Please note we cannot access the messaging aspect of Class Dojo, should you need to contact us please do so by telephone or in writing.

PE days

This term P.E. days are as follows:

Primary 1F P.E. days are Tuesday and Thursday.

On these days it would be helpful to the children if they could come to school dressed with polo shirt and jumper rather than shirt and tie in order to make changing for P.E. easier.

 Learning focus this term:

Through our topic Play, Toys and Games we will be learning about:

  • Toys and games from the past
  • Cultural differences in play
  • How to stay safe when playing with electronic games and devices
  • The importance of internet safety.
  • The children will also be encouraged to develop their skills as part of ‘Developing Young Workforce’ by working as part of a team to design and create a toy/game of their choice and present this to the rest of the class.

  • RWI Speed sounds
  • Letter recognition and letter formation
  • Sounding and blending with the help of Fred talk

Core Numeracy:

  • Number recognition 0-10
  • Number formation 0-10
  • Number sequencing and number ordering

Health and Wellbeing:

As a Health Promoting school we actively encourage and teach our children to make healthy choices, to enable then to become healthy, active and emotionally resilient young people of the future.

We are delighted to be able to continue to deliver 2 hours of PE a week as well as opportunities for children to be active in our fabulous new grounds.

We would appreciate your support in promoting a healthy and balanced diet, both in your child’s morning snack and in their packed lunch.  We would discourage any type of fizzy juice in school or energy drinks.  Children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle, which they can use during class time.  There are water fountains situated throughout the school for daily use.

Please encourage your child to participate in the Active Sports Clubs that are on offer at lunchtimes and after school, as well as any school based clubs that take place throughout the year.  Keep looking in school bags for further information.

A reminder that all children who cycle or scooter to school must wear a safety helmet and ‘walk’ their bikes whilst in the playground. There are bike racks available.

Class Birthdays

We always celebrate if a member of the class has a birthday however we would request that birthday cakes are not brought into school to share with the class. In school, we have children with allergies who may be at risk from some ingredients. The cutting up and distributing of birthday cake also cuts into valuable learning time.

Playground toys:

We have a playground equipment for children to play with during lunchtime.  Please do not bring in your own toys – except for Golden Time on a Friday – so that we can be sure that all toys in the playground belong to the school.  Many thanks for your support.

Golden Time toys:

Children can bring a ‘toy’ to school on a Friday to play with during Golden Time. Please remember that the school cannot take responsibility for the safety of these toys and therefore we

request that your child does not bring in expensive/ electronic items without your consent.  We appreciate your support with this matter.

Yellow Wing Cuddle on the Couch

Please help us to promote reading by joining us for Cuddle on the Couch.  Come along to the Yellow Wing and spend some time reading with your child.  This will be on alternate Mondays and Thursdays from 9 – 9.30, dates to follow.

I look forward to working in partnership with you this session.

Kind regards,

Mrs Fraser.
