Methlick’s Big Night In – Community Challenge – Poster Design

Good morning everyone!

If you have watched Mrs Fraser’s assembly this morning, then you will be aware of the upcoming event – Methlick’s Big Night In!

On the 22nd of May, the staff at Methlick School will be putting on a quiz night for everyone in the community to participate in – all from the comfort of your own home. It will be filmed as a video and accessed through the ‘Methlick Primary’ YouTube channel. We will post up links to the video on both the blog and SeeSaw.

To publicise the event, we need your help! Mrs Fraser has created a poster but we need the talented pupils of Methlick School to design a new and improved version.

All the information for the event can be found on Mrs Fraser’s poster. We would be thrilled if you could help us and design your own.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Include all the information
  • Make sure it is neatly presented
  • Use an eye-catching design and layout
  • Lots of bold and bright colours
  • Include pictures or drawings that are related to a quiz night

If you create a poster, please email a picture of it to your class teacher. This will help us to publicise the event so that everyone in the Methlick community knows about it! Please can all posters be completed by Friday (15th).

Thank you for your help and remember to set your calendars for May 22nd – Methlick’s Big Night In!

Mr.Mutch’s Digital Skills Quest #2

Lets get ready for Episode 1!

So last term I started a new challenge for myself to learn some digital skills to take back to the classroom. I decided to do this through making a web-show that we can all take part in creating.

This is a project that we could easily continue when we are back to school, learning about screen-writing, story-boarding, filming and editing in a club.

I’ve already started my learning journey by producing ‘Mr.Mutch vs Mr.Reid which I think has been quite popular. For Mr.Reid and myself to communicate so far away we had to make codes and notes that we could understand. So that was my first step into story boarding. You can see in the sway below a sneak peak of some of the story boards from the episode. Can you match the drawings to the shot in the final video?

You can follow the sway below to get and update and find out what the first episode is going to be about with the first roll.

It’s going to be a wild story as I’m going to have to get my thinking hat on. I’ll be in charge of the first 3 cubes but you have to tell me what I should do to finish the story.

I asked you last time to create for me a logo for the Web Show. I have a few in but would like a larger group to feature in the opening titles.

Here is the task from last time:

So Lets find out about the show…

A synopsis:

Imagine the Magic Key from Biff, Chip and Kipper, mixed with Jumanji, add a dash of bedtime stories, all told through story cubes and you will have my idea of the Web Show.

A boy receives a strange package in the mail, it has an oddly written letter and a bag full of cubes. The cubes all have a variety of different symbols on them, they are Story Cubes. When he rolls the cubes, the symbols that are on top will become the story that he is sucked into (just like the magic key stories). The cubes will lead him on an eventful adventure until he returns home. Each adventure will be different as you never know how the cubes will roll.

6 cubes will be rolled each time, an episode will cover the first three cubes. It will be your task to look at the remaining cubes and write the second half of the story. It will be up to me to choose one or combine a few ideas and film the next episode. These stories can be as imaginative as possible as it will be up to me to figure out how to bring the story to life learning new digital skills along the way while staying at home.

The Web-Show will be called ‘CUBES’

Your first task  is to design for me the logo of the show, something that I will use in the title sequence.

Your Success Criteria

  • It must include the name ‘Cubes’
  • It must relate to the synopsis you have been given
  • It must be colourful
  • It must be readable and viewed easily at a glance

If you can think of a tagline for the show, that would also be great to add to your design. Or you can try to create an animation for the title sequence on Scratch Jr.

I look forward to see your logos.

Health and Wellbeing Grid 2 Task

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a FAB Easter break 🙂

Today I thought I would focus my blog post on a nice easy relaxing choice from our new grid since it launches today and you might just be getting to familiarise yourself with it.

I chose  the Health and Wellbeing task, this term we were going to be working cooperatively with Rev Will Stalder and the Methlick community to celebrate VE Day by creating artistic pieces of words related to VE Day. We decided as a staff to choose this as one of our home learning activities.

The Primary 7 word is Resolution luckily I randomly had a bucket of toy soldiers and thought I could display my words using that HOWEVER half way through I realised I wouldn’t have enough toy soldiers 🤔

Then I used some problem solving skills I made the first five letters of the word took a picture of it and then made the second 5 letters took a picture and merged them together using a Picture collage app.

I can’t wait to see what you all do for your class word.

Please share your ideas below and send any completed ones to your teacher.

Mr.Mutch’s Quest for Digital Media Skills #1

During this time we are all at home, it gives us a chance to spend time inside doing things we regularly don’t often give enough time to. Feeling inspired by Mr.Reid’s Music Journey I wanted to give myself the challenge too to learn something new. Like Mr.Reid I want to learn something that I can use in the future. Thinking about my interests I’ve decided to combine a few ideas together into one big project.

I’m going to create a web series. Throughout I’m going to learn about filming, editing, special effects, script writing and I want you to join and help me along the way.

I have taken home a variety of supplies from school to enable me to bring our wild and wacky stories to life, yes I did say OUR! It wont just be me who will be doing the work.  Together we will work together and learn about creative writing, characterisation, graphic design and many more.

So Lets find out about the show…

Your logo designs can be created in any art medium you want. Please email me your designs on my glow to gw18mutchconnor. I look forward to viewing your designs after the holidays.

Literacy Grid 1 – Mild Challenge – Letter Formation – Down and Bounce Letter Family

Good morning boys and girls,

I spent yesterday making some resources to help you with this mild challenge from Literacy Grid 1.

Letter Formation

Choose a family of letters to practise each day.

Watch the videos to help you form the letters

These resources help you learn to form the

Down and bounce family of letters

Think about a ball dropping down to the ground.

When it hits the ground it bounces back up and then often moves forward making an invisible rainbow line, curved line.

b h k m n p r

These letters always begin at the top, (a ball won’t bounce far if you don’t start with it up high);

with a straight line being drawn down.

The pencil travels back up the straight line;

and then the pencil is used to draw a curved line to the right, that line ends in different ways for the letters in this family.

Before you start to form your letters remember to warm up your hand by drawing curved lines – try drawing clouds and rainbows.

I have started a drawing that would help you practise these movements before you write letters from the down and bounce family. Click on the picture above to see a larger version for you to copy.

I wonder who might be holding the umbrella and have their feet in the boots?

A rainbow is drawn with curved lines

Clouds are a wonderful way to draw joined curved lines and this helps to improve fluidity.

Spirals could form puddles and lots of short diagonal lines can cover the page with rain. Zig zag lines could form grass.

Enjoy!

The videos in the Sway below show you how to write the the letters in this family.

Scratch Jr Easter Egg Card Challenge!

Many of the you have used the Scratch Jr iPad app in school. It is free to download.

We are challenging those who have access to a device to create an Easter Card – hopefully we will be able to share some of the designs before the end of term.

If you get a wee bit stuck – leave a comment and hopefully we can all help each other.

Also if you DISCOVER something – comment and let us learn from you.

The document below shares how you can break down the task and push yourself to learn more.

Have Fun!

New – Outdoor Learning Grid 1

Hopeful for some spring sunshine and warmth we thought you might like to explore the challenges on Outdoor Learning Grid 1 to learn about worms, create a nest and investigate the rainbow spectrum of colours.

Outdoor Learning Grid 1

Capture your learning in your journal or sway and leave a COMMENT to let us know what you have been learning to do. Help everyone to feel connected and that we are learning together.

Mild challenge

Rainbow Scavenger Hunt – Rainbow_Nature_hunt

Nest resource – giant-nest-building-sheet

Spicy challenge

Nest resource – pdf_build_a_bird_nest

Hot challenge

Worm resource – Opal Lab Worm Identification Chart

Rainbow resource – making-rainbows

Nest resource – andygoldsworthy-slideshare

When you come back indoors:

Mild challengers might like to sit and listen to ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson. Worms are superheroes in our gardens. Can you find out why?

Spicy challengers might like to sit and listen to ‘Yucky Worms’ by Vivian French. You could turn the sound off and read the book independently by pausing the clip at the right time for you. List the facts you learn from the story in your journal or sway.

Hot challengers, older children might like to watch the Springwatch documentary about earthworms which includes information about their importance, varieties. predators, how they reproduce and how to investigate them.  Creating a mindmap would help you to summarise the main points in your learning journal or sway.

Health and Wellbeing Grid 1 SPICY challenge!

This is my attempt at this challenge from the health and wellbeing grid1.

I wanted to try the spicy challenge.

“Johanna Basford is a very successful Aberdeenshire artist.

She has shared some images for you to download and colour.

The hare is amazing.

Take a look and download a design to colour in.

If you can’t print maybe you could photograph on a device and mark up to colour in.”

We look forward to

  • hearing about your efforts, please LEAVE A COMMENT.

OR

  • seeing your attempts in your journals when we get back to school

OR

  • posting some of your learning journeys when you share your SWAY with your teacher (P1 do not have access to this)

I have used sway to share my learning journey.
