Rationale

One of 4 key priorities for Aberdeenshire Council E&CS is “Improving learning teaching and assessment”.

Additionally, within all of the GTCS professional standards (2021) is a requirement to:

“Have an enhanced and critically informed understanding of pedagogical theories and professional practice” and “Have a depth of knowledge and understanding of planning for assessment, teaching and learning”.

Such a focus is important as the quality of practice regarding learning, teaching and assessment has a significant impact on the experiences and outcomes for all children and young people.

The purpose of an authority position statement on Learning, Teaching and Assessment is to promote a common understanding amongst all school staff who are involved with learners of what constitutes highly effective practice.  The context within which learning takes place varies from school to school and sector to sector.  However, this position statement acknowledges that there are principles of learning, teaching and assessment which have universal application.
