The Fruit Trees

All of P3 were planting trees in the school grounds with Norma Hunter as part of “the edible walk”.

I  think all of them had fun! They planted apple ,plum and pear trees. We are looking forward togetting fruit on the trees that everyone can enjoy eating!

The idea behind the edible walk is that people in the community can walk around Huntly, from Battlehill down to the Deveron  and taste food that has been planted along the way.

Bikeability

P5A\B have started their  Bikeability training.

They have been training to get their bikeability certificates. They are learning how to ride their bikes safely,  learning how to set off safely, right and left hand turns, how to do correct hand signals.

Tree Planting 2013

Every class from p4 to p7 has been tree planting last week.We planted black thorn, hazelnut, wild cherry and pine and we did it in the meadows. We had to dig the whole with a fancy shovel and made sure the roots were covered and patted it down and then put a bit of wood what is called a stake beside it  and then put a tree guard around it. When we get older we will have fun watching them grow. I think every one had fun and so did I!

Gardening

Shane (P6b) had been in the Gardening Group for Hobbies. Ever since then he has enjoyed gardening a lot and  he is now the head gardener, working with Craig, Keiran, Thomas and Grant!  They are working very hard to look after all the flowers around Gordon Primary School!

They have been planting tulips and daffodils which have been placed around the school, in the entrance foyer and corridors. They have certainly given the school a bright cheerful feel.  They also planted some spinach!

Mr Gray Leaving

Sadly Mr Gray is going to be leaving this Thursday.

He has been working at Gordon Primary School for several years, he will be taking up a position at Alford Primary School after the Mid-term break!

Mr Gray has participated in a lot of after school and lunchtime clubs. His skills and knowledge will be greatly missed in this area!

Most of the children will be very sad to see Mr Gray leave and so will a lot of the staff will miss his enthusiasm and humour!

Gordon Primary School wishes Mr Gray the best of luck in his next stage of his career and will offer a warm welcome whenever he comes to visit!

Outdoor Fun

Other classes also took the opportunity of working outdoors in the snow, making the most of the fact that the snow was perfect for making snowballs and snowmen.  P4 and P3 classes went outside today to build snowmen. P4C worked together in their co-operative learning groups to build and name a snowman. One group made a snow horse. P4B decided they wanted a change from snowmen and worked together to build a snow dolphin and other animals.

Horse logging

Primary 4A and 4B were very lucky to be able to go down to the meadows to watch the horse logging last Thursday (Nov 30th). The trip was organised by Aberdeenshire Council and the Forestry Commission.

Over a period of 3 weeks about 155 trees had been moved from the Meadows using the traditional method of horse logging.

They learnt about the importance of the woods for encouraging wildlife, the uses of the forest (for paper production and fuel) and why the forest was being thinned.  The Clydesdale horse was being used to move the felled logs because it was able to fit into smaller space that a tractor wouldn’t be able to fit into.

The children were able to stroke Wesley, the horse and help to feed him.

Ther outing was very interesting and everyone enjoyed seeing the horse and learning about logging.

Tree Planting

The nursery recently went for a walk around the school grounds to look at trees. They studied the leaves, looking at their shapes and the autumn colours. They looked at the bark of trees and felt their texture.

Tghey went to the shops to buy bird feeders, food to put in it and fat balls. Back at the nursery they filled the bird feeders with seeds and nuts, and hung them up in the nursery garden for the birds to enjoy.

They also helped to plant some trees.
