Broad General Education S1-3

In S1 pupils have one period a week in Art & Design as part of the Expressive Arts curriculum. Pupils have the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials, techniques and technologies working through both Expressive and Design projects. They will respond to work by artists and designers practicing within similar contexts. Pupils will build a broad range of subject specific skills and knowledge working through a variety of themes.

Pupils in S1 also have an additional 1 period a week for half the year where the focus is on cross curricular learning opportunities within the Expressive Arts Faculty.

In S2 pupils have one period a week in Art & Design. Pupils have the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials, techniques and technologies working through both Expressive and Design projects. They will respond to work by artists and designers practicing within similar contexts. Pupils will build a broad range of subject specific skills and knowledge working through a variety of themes.

To support greater personalisation and choice, in S3 pupils follow an elective based course structure being able to select either one or two out of the three Expressive Arts subjects. They will be in their chosen subject areas for 2 periods a week. The choice to work within an elective based structure enables pupils to deepen their skills and broaden experience in preparation for certificate courses. In this programme of study, pupils undertake schemes of work that cover Architecture, Portraiture and Still Life. The focus in S3 is on further developing strong analytical drawing, painting and 3D modelling skills which will build depth of learning in preparation for study at National 4/5.

NATIONAL 4 ART & DESIGN

Candidates undertaking National 4 will study both Expressive and Design elements. The course consists of two mandatory Units where pupils investigate and develop ideas relating to their chosen theme and context. To complete the course pupils must undertake an Added Value Unit where they will produce a final outcome and solution for their Expressive and Design Unit work. All elements are internally assessed on a pass or fail basis. There is no written exam at National 4.

Expressive Unit

  •  Pupils work through the Expressive process; they will select a theme, undertake analytical studies, develop compositions and complete evaluative written comments on their own work.
  •   Pupils will write about the work of two artists.

Design Unit

  •  Pupils work through the Design process; they will select a context and theme, undertake thematic and market research, develop ideas for their chosen context of Design and complete evaluative written comments on their own work.
  •  Pupils will write about the work of two designers.

Added Value Unit

  •  Pupils produce a large scale colour drawing painting based on their theme.
  •  Pupils produce a 3D design piece based on their drawings.
  •  Pupils write about the success of both pieces of work in a short evaluation.

NATIONAL 5 & HIGHER ART & DESIGN

Candidates undertaking National 5 and Higher will study both Expressive and Design elements. These courses consist of two mandatory Units where pupils investigate and develop ideas relating to their chosen themes and contexts. Pupils will also work on an Expressive and a Design Portfolio and a written exam with work relating to that undertaken in their Unit. Units are internally assessed on a pass or fail basis. Portfolios are externally assessed by the SQA as is the written exam. Course assessment is graded A-D.

Expressive Unit

  • Pupils work through the Expressive process; they will select a theme, undertake analytical studies, develop compositions and complete evaluative written comments on their own work.
  • Pupils will write in detail about the work and social and cultural factors influencing of two artists.

Design Unit

  •   Pupils work through the Design process; they will select a context and theme, undertake thematic and market research, develop ideas for their chosen context of Design and complete evaluative written comments on their own work.
  •  Pupils will write in detail about the work and social and cultural factors influencing of two designers.

Expressive Portfolio

  •  Pupils produce a range of development compositions based on the theme selected for their Unit.
  •  Pupils produce a large scale final outcome based on the development of their theme.
  •  Pupils complete brief written evaluations for both their development and final outcome.

Design Portfolio

  •   Pupils devise a design brief based around research from their Unit.
  • Pupils produce a series of drawings and 3D maquettes illustrating the development of one idea to support their design product.
  • Pupils experiment with a range of materials and techniques.
  •  Pupils produce a final 3D solution to support their design brief.

Written Exam

  •   This a 1 hour 10 minute written exam for National 5 and 2 hours for Higher. Pupils are required to respond to given images and related questions on both artists and designers as well as writing about artists and designers that they have studied in class.

ADVANCED HIGHER ART & DESIGN

The course consists of a mandatory Unit comprising both practical and written work as well as an Expressive portfolio, also comprising practical, written and evaluative elements. Candidates’ Units are internally assessed on a pass or fail basis. Portfolios are externally assessed by the SQA and are graded A-D. There is no written exam.

Unit

  • Pupils select a personal theme, undertake an analytical studies and compositions and develop confidence experimenting with a range of media and techniques.
  • Pupils analyse the work of at least two artists.
  • Pupils complete written evaluations on their own work.

Portfolio- both practical and written elements

  •  Pupils produce a range of development compositions based on the theme selected for their Unit, refining use of materials and working processes.
  • Pupils produce a number of resolved pieces based around their development work.
  •  Pupils complete an in-depth critical analysis of a single or closely related art works in an extended essay (2,000 words).
  • Pupils complete a well-considered evaluation of their practical portfolio of art work (300 words).
