Graphing

In maths, we are learning how to collect and organise data, display the information in a graph and interpret information from the graph.

Last week, as part of our “Around our School” topic, we collected data about how we had travelled to school. We organised the information in a table and used this to produce graphs. We learned that graphs have a title, labels and a scale.

We used the same information in our ICT lessons to create a graph.

We have been working on different kinds on graphs this week and are becoming more independent in organising our information and answering questions about it.

Some of us worked on Snowman graphs.

Snowman parts

We had to count how many different part of the snowman we had and show the number with tally marks in a table.

Others worked on animal graphs.

Odd and Even

On the IWB

We are learning to count in 2’s and about odd and even numbers.

On Thursday we did a maths investigation to work out odd and even numbers for ourselves. Mr Stewart gave us a number and we had to make “friends of 2” with our cubes to make our number. We discovered that if we could mke the number with groups of 2 then it was an even number and if we had one left over then we had an odd number.

Here we are hard at work.

Pleased with our work.

Monster Problem Solving

Trying out our monster faces!

We are using our problem solving skills to work out the solution to maths stories.

Today we tried work out the answer to a story about different coloured monsters. We are going to start a maths vocabulary wall. Today, Mrs Stewart wanted us to remember that the word “equal” can mean the same quantity or amount.

Patterns

We have been learning about patterns. We have learned that an AB pattern is a repeating pattern of two things.

On Friday we tried to make ABC pattern. ABC patterns use 3 different things to make a repeating pattern. We rotated in groups to experiment making colour patterns with pegs, cubes and paint. We also tried to make shape patterns by drawing around them.

New beginnings!

Today was our first day back at school. We were all looking very smart in our new school uniforms.

We spoke about our goals and expectations for Primary 2. Mrs Stewart told us that we are going to work very hard this year but will be having lots of fun as well!

The walls of our classroom are a bit bare at the moment, but Mrs Stewart said that we will quickly fill it up with all our own work. Our first job was to make some “Back to School” pencil glyphs to decorate our walls.

A glyph is a way of showing information in the form of a picture. For example, if we were a packed lunch today we made our pencil with a pink rubber, the dinners chose green and the homes chose red. Here are some pictures so you can see what we did.

Our display
We chose a pencil colour to reflect how we were feeling.

We have more pictures of our first day which we will be posting soon. Keep checking back to see what we are doing.
