Road Safety Poster Winner

A wee while ago, the Junior Road Safety Officers at our school ran a competition. Everyone in the school had to design a poster to encourage children to cross the road safely.

Today, at assembly, we had a lovely surprise when we found out that one of our Superstars had designed one of the winning posters!

All the posters will be displayed in and around the school. Super work, Superstar.

My Day, Month and Year Part 2

Today we spent more time exploring our mini science topic.

First, we looked again at the phases of the moon. We looked at the website of Woodlands Junior School which has some great information.

We completed our own guide to the different phases of the moon.

Then, we made some models of the moon, earth and sun to help us explain how they move around each other.

After playtime, we started to create our own out of this world pictures.

We used plates and other circle shapes to create planet outlines on black paper, using our soft crayons. Some of the planets had to be just peeking out from the edges.

We were allowed to use any colours we wanted, as we were creating our own special planets.

Next, we splattered white and yellow paint over our picture for stars. Some of them turned into shoooting stars!

Here are some lovely, colourful planets from Carly. I like the tartan one.

Finally, we added our own faces to astronaut cutouts and added them to our picture.

Here is our science display outside our classroom.

Today’s Dragon Mail

The Dragon wrote to let us know that he loved the posters that we made yesterday.

We are trying to make our beanstalk bigger. We made some more leaves when we had finished our maths and cut them out so they are ready to be added to the beanstalk.

Mrs Bailey brought us in some more books. One of them is called “Daft Jack and the Bean Stack.” We are about half way through it and we are really enjoying it. We think it is quite funny.

We talked about the main features of a book cover. We looked at the different “Jack” stories that we have in class and discussed what we liked about them and why.

We designed our own book covers.

In the afternoon we tried acting out parts of the story using mime. Then we worked in small groups and improvised and added some dialogue to our scene. We learned that we have to use nice loud voices and remember to face our audience when we are performing.

We created these “Rudolph at the Window” pictures today.

Will Rudolph be bringing a special visitor to your house soon?

We are looking at different kinds of houses as part of our “Around our School” topic.

Here are some houses of our own that we made using paper lunch bags. The Superstars added lots of their own details to mke each one unique. They look fantastic!

Moshi Monsters

This term we will be using Moshi Monsters as a context for a cross curricular project focusing on health and wellbeing, ICT and art.

Read this article from Learning and Teaching Scotland about a school in Stirling who carried out their own very successful Moshi Monsters project.

We have all adopted our own monsters online. Today we made a mind map of what out monsters would need to keep them happy and healthy. We are going to use this as basis for our learning over the coming weeks.

Having a discussion in our groups.

Our mind map.

Making Predictions

We have been learning to know and use the term “prediction” when looking at story books in class. We looked at the cover of this book, but Mrs Stewart hid the title from us.

We had to predict what the title would be by looking really closely at the picture and using all the clues available to us. We agreed that Emily made the best prediction with “The Girl who wanted a Lion for a Pet.”

Afterwards, we made these lovely lions from paper plates. They make a great display outside our classroom.
