Little Red Riding Hood Maths

We have been learning about position in maths and language.

We found out that the position of something tells you where it is. We worked together to make a list of position words such as over, in, above, below etc.

Mrs Stewart told us that these words are also called prepositions.

We worked in groups of four to illustrate our understanding of these words.

We each had a character from Little Red Riding Hood. We each made a separate poster in our group of four. We made a collage or drew a picture and added a sentence with a position word. Then we put all four posters together to make one big poster. We attached our fairytale character to the middle by a piece of ribbon. This meant that we could move our character to the place indicated in the poster.

Have a look at some of our work

We are now making Red Riding Hood themed Bee Bot mats. We will post some more pictures once we have finished.

Dear diary …

Today we were writing Little Red Riding Hood’s diary, for the day she went to visit Granny, and bumped into that very wicked wolf …

Mrs Stewart gave us the start and we had to continue writing the diary from there.

We had to imagine that we were Little Red Riding Hood doing the writing.

We also had to remember that we could not put in the part about the wolf eating Granny because we were still walking through the forest when that part of the story happened.

It was a wee bit tricky, but we worked hard and did a great job.

Superstar Spelling

Here is another fantastic example of creative spelling from one of our Superstars.

Last week we were studying long “a” sounds – ay, ai and a_e.

Here is an amazing train cake.

Even spelling can be yummy!!

Here is another great idea. This Superstar made a game to learn her spelling words. In the lovely pink container there are all her spelling words and some flowers. To play the game you have to pick out a word. If you can read it, you can keep it. If you pick a flower, you miss a turn. The winner is the one with the most words at the end of the game!

Here is a fairytale troll with the spelling words on him.

Ninjas and the Wolves

My class have such great ideas. There is something to make me smile every day.. .

I just thought I would share Ethan’s picture with you.

Ethan told me that it is 2 Ninjas fighting the wolves and the one with the hammer (on the right) has already put one wolf into the fire.

I hope you like it as much as me!!!

Ten Flashing Fireflies

In maths, we have been learning to solve addition and subtraction story problems using pictures and manipulatives and then an equation. We have learned that the word “equation” is another name for a sum or number sentence.

Yesterday, we read a book called “Ten Flashing Fireflies.”

The cards on the left are part-part whole cards. We look at the number on one side and we have to work out what the number is on the other side that makes up the whole number at the top.

First, we warmed up our brains by doing some subitising. Subitising is being able to see how many things there are in a small collection without counting by ones. We used some dot cards.

In the book the children catch fireflies and put them in a jar.

As Mrs Stewart read the story, Frazer moved the fireflies into the jar using the interactive whiteboard.

We discussed what equations we could write that represented the pages in the story.

We then had our own firefly story problems to solve.

We had problems for numbers within 20 and some up to 100 if we wanted a challenge. Most Superstars chose challenge questions!!

We used our think mats to solve the equations.

What a busy morning!

Little Red Riding Hood

This week we are reading different versions of Little Red Riding Hood.

We also enjoyed watching this one from the British Council online.

We are thinking about beginnings, middles and ends in our stories. So far, we have found three different endings to the story!

We have been re-writing the story in our own words.

This Superstar made a Little Red Riding Hood, with this week’s spelling words in her basket, for her homework.

Next week we will be doing Little Red Riding Hood maths.

Leave us a comment to let us know which fairytale you like best.

Marching Band

We are learning about sound in our science lessons. We have been experimenting with loud and quiet sounds and learning about volume and pitch.

Today, Mrs Stewart gave us some pictures of musical instruments and we had to sort them into groups. She didn’t give us any clues but told us there were four groups. Being very clever, we all managed to work out that we sorted the groups depending on how the instruments were played.

We had lots of fun experimenting with different instruments. We decided we would be a marching band and went outside and marched around the school playing our instruments!! Unfortunately, the camera decided not to work so we can’t show you our pictures.

We had a look at this great website, from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, which teaches you about different parts of the orchestra and has lots of different musical activities. We especially liked the Performalator. We are all going to try it out when we are next in the computer room.
