Did you know that the Ancient Egyptians didn’t just mummify Pharohs and other important people. They also mummified their cats!

Nearly all ancient Egyptian homes had a cat. But cats were not pets.

The Ancient Egyptians believed that cats had magical powers. They believed cats protected their homes and children from danger. They kept a cat for protection.

Cats did keep down the rat population and they did chase away snakes but cats were much more important to the ancient Egyptians than that.

The Egyptians mummmified their cats so the cats could help protect them in the afterlife.

You were in big trouble if you hurt a cat in ancient Egypt. Your punishment could be death.

Mrs Stewart told us that she saw some real mummified cats when she visited the Egyptian Exhibitions at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh last year.

We have been making our own cat mummies. First, we made a cat shape from newpaper and masking tape. Then we wrapped our cat in bandages made from wet kitchen roll. They are just drying out now. Some of us want to paint them and some of us just want to leave them as they are. We are still deciding…
