  1. All of the children and staff from Ulva Primary School (Isle of Mull) would like to share what a fantastic day we had celebrating World Book Day on 7th March 2019!
As you know, World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.
In the build up to the day, the children made their own bookmarks and took part in a reading challenge at home which included tasks such as ‘read a poem’, ‘ read to your pet’, ‘read in your pj’s’, and ‘read in a den you have made’, all with the aim of enjoying the fun of reading.
For World Book Day itself, the children (and staff) dressed as characters from their favourite books and stories – we had Captain Haddock (from Tin Tin), Cotton Tail / Little Grey Rabbit, Link (from the Legend of Zelda), a Rainbow Unicorn / Pony, a rider from ‘The Racehorse who wouldn’t gallop!’, Mary Poppins, Enmet (from the Lego Movie), Spiderman, the Bear (from ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’), the Ice Queen (from The lion, the witch and the wardrobe / Narnia) and Fantastic Mr Fox.
Everyone also brought in books to share, so we built a den and read to each other in it.
We received a gift of donated books from the Highland Bookshop in Fort William, which the children loved.
We had a visit from our local librarian, who read some of her favourite stories including Goldilocks and Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, and then – much to the children’s delight – we went on a bear hunt!
In addition to all of that, we had a number of quizzes themed around literacy, made bunting with a design from our favourite books, and were visited by some of the children’s family to share in the fun.
What a brilliant day! We hope you enjoyed World Book Day too. If you’d like to see some pictures of our day, take a look at our school blog: https://ulvaschoolprimary.wordpress.com/
