The guidance below is an update of all previous guidance. This document details how we approach Child Protection in educational establishment and contains the relevant directions, advice and paperwork to enable staff to take forward their duties with regard to safeguarding children in Argyll and Bute.

Argyll and Bute School Staff Receive a Professional Development Award

On the 21st June 2016, 22 Classroom and Additional Support Needs Assistants received certificates for the SQA Professional Development Award (PDA) in Education Support Assistance in a ceremony held in the Loch Fyne Hotel, Inveraray.

Roslyn Redpath, Principal Educational Psychologist, presented the certificates on behalf of Argyll and Bute Council and congratulated the candidates on their hard work and commitment.

Consultation on Highly Able Pupils Framework

You may be aware that a working party was set up last session to review and re-write education policy and practice guidance on Highly Able Pupils. As the next step in the consultation process, we would like to get feedback on the framework from parents/carers and children and young people.

Parklands ‘doors open’ day.

Parklands in Helensburgh plan to hold a doors open day on their Nov in-service day. They are offering opportunities to see what resources they use, how they operate as well as a tour. The school are also happy to respond to requests  regarding any other aspects of the work of the school that staff are interested in seeing.

I currently offer training in the following areas on request at single establishments up to local cluster level events.
Applied Behaviour Analysis, Autism Awareness, Autism Training
Assertive Discipline, Pathological Demand Avoidance
Working Together – assistant and teacher roles and responsibilities in school
Internet Safety (Parents and Carers), Internet Safety (P4 to P7)
File Auditing Processes – girfec compliance for practitioners, Girfec Named Person/Lead Professional Training (Full Day), Girfec Workshops for NP/LPs (Half Day)

Also on offer is case based consultancy and support to schools, parents and other professionals for specific children or groups of children to produce individual plans, procedures, protocols and processes to support developing positive behaviour.

Autism update

Our website has been updated for February. This month you can download
the Scottish Strategy’s Menu of Interventions (a guide to interventions
and support for people on the autism spectrum). We have information on a
Knowledge Share event taking place In Lochgilphead in March and there’s
a link to Debi Brown’s website and blog. Debi is a women with Asperger’s
Syndrome who has delivered talks for Autism Argyll in the past.
