Pupils from Primary 6 and 7 were delighted to take up the invitation to spend a day in London and take part in a workshop at Parliament. The pupils who are all either members of school committees or house captains were up bright and early to catch their morning flight to Gatwick. On arriving in London the pupils had a tour of Westminster Abbey seeing the tomb of the unknown soldier, the coronation chair and Churchill’s memorial.
After lunch in Central Hall it was onto Portcullis House where pupils started their tour of Parliament by going through the underground tunnel that is used by David Cameron himself to get into the Palace of Westminster! Time was spent watching debates in both the Commons and the Lords before a tour of Central Lobby and Westminster Hall. Pupils then took part in a workshop led by Parliament’s Education service to deepen their learning about citizenship.
They left the Houses of Parliament as experts with one or two even claiming that they would come back as MPs or even the PM! With this in mind they proceeded to 10 Downing Street to view David Cameron’s residence. Pupils were very lucky to get a photo opportunity with a member of the Household Cavalry at Horse Guards before heading on to see Buckingham Palace. On the flight home pupils agreed that the day had been fantastic although they are still disagreeing on who should be the next Prime Minister…
What a fantastic trip!!! You certainly packed a lot into the day and am sure there are many budding Prime Ministers in the making in P6 and P7. Well done to your teachers for planning such a wonderful trip.
