St Mun’s Night at the Oscars

Never mind the premier of the new James Bond film, Thursday 25th October saw Primary 7 at St. Mun’s, walk their own red carpet as they attended their own movie premier and Oscar Ceremony, which was witnessed by friends, family and important invited guests.

The night signalled the completion of an interdisciplinary project on the movies where the children not only learned about the growth of the movie industry but made their own movies featuring a little bear, ‘Buddy’, who arrived in their classroom at the end of August, with a letter asking them to make him a movie star. Who would have thought that a little bear would cause such a commotion? What followed was a frenzy of activity with script writing, storyboards, costume and prop design, posters and one minute pitches and finally the all important filming and editing.

Whilst the project encouraged the children work collaboratively without adult intervention, they did have some expert knowledge to give them advice and help where required in the shape of Grammar School pupil, Kyle Blincow who has helped with the Grammar’s Television Station, worked with green screen technology and has starred in both stage and screen productions himself. Through a government scheme, which the Grammar School is a part of, he is able to give up some of his study periods and help in school or in the community. These hours are then added up at the end of the year and go towards a certificated scheme. As well as working in various classes in the Grammar School, Kyle helps out at his old primary school on a Friday afternoon and this term will be helping with the production of the Christmas show.

Prizes were give out on the night to all the groups for various aspects of the project, while the Oscar for Best Movie was voted for on the night by the audience. Movies included Buddy Impossible, Buddy Holmes, Buddy Potter, Buddy and The Beanstalk, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Bear with the Oscar going to The Buddsters – Rosie, Jennifer, Lewis and Caleb (assisted by Rhys) for their movie The Buddy Clause. With acceptance speeches given the night ended with Buddy the Movie Star heading off to have a large hot chocolate to celebrate his new found stardom.
