OUR WORLD IN MOTION at Port Ellen

From the 12th March-16th March it is science and engineering week. Primary 4-7 are all taking part in a whole week of science and all the activities we do is about forces. The first thing that we learned was Newton’s 3 laws and they are very important because they describe forces very well. The first law is “when forces acting on an object they are balanced,it will remain at rest or move in an straight line at constant speed”. The 2nd law is “force=mass x acceleration”. The 3rd law is “every action has an equal and opposite reaction” and that is Newtons 3 laws.

We started by learning about forces, for example there was friction, if you went on something bumpy friction would slow you down, and mass if something is heavy it will have mass and it will slow it down. We used what we found out later in the week to build our cars.
Then we learned about air resistance, aerodynamics and propulsion. We made planes parachutes and rockets and designed a renewable energy powered car.
When making our car, we had to think about what it will run on. We have been designing the car to look funky and cool. The car is looking ok but we will be making it look even better. We have to add our own engine as well. Making the car was really, really tricky, but also fun. It ran on batteries and after lunch parents came to watch and see them go through a series of challenges, including an obstacle course. The winners were the Mad Mechanics.
In nursery and Primary 1&2 they looked at pushes and pulls and made bubbles and bubble pictures. In primary 3&4 they made kites. It was a really scientific week!

  1. I’m really impressed by this exciting learning Port Ellen. Science and Engineering is so important for our future and such a lot of fun too. The cars seem like a great way to put your learning about Newton’s Laws into practice!
