The P4-6 pupils from Ashfield Primary School experienced two visits to the Lochgilphead Joint Campus. Investigations into ‘Materials in our World’ were taken into a real Science Laboratory in the Campus and the children undertook experiments with the guidance of Dr O’Donnell and Mr Rocket. Chemicals were used to make ‘smelly’ mixtures and the highlight was the competition to make the longest nylon string!
Pupils also participated in a fun quiz, using the interactive hand-held Pods, to test their knowledge about Materials. Each pupil had researched a famous scientist and their written projects were judged by Miss Devine. Prizes were awarded to the pupils for their efforts.
A mystery woodwork project was the activity for the second visit. Mrs Peace and the Technician, Billy, prepared the Technical Woodwork Room for the pupils to make a key holder. All pupils became engrossed in the process and techniques of creating a shaped piece of timber from a rough block. The use of each tool was carefully demonstrated by Mrs Peace and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience of trying out a plane, drill and electric sander. A lot of effort was needed for the final polishing! The key holders all have proud owners and have been put to good use, even as a necklace holder!
This was an excellent opportunity for pupils to find out about learning in the Secondary setting and they are all looking forward to the next stage in their education.
