Primary 6 Blog

It has been a busy few weeks in Primary 6W!

In numeracy we have been continuing to work on our fractions, decimals and percentages topic.  We have been learning how to create equivalent and simplified fractions as well as learning how to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to percentages.  In Maths we have been learning to calculate the area and perimeter of a shape.

In literacy we have been working on improving our poetry skills by creating our own poems based on the themes of WW2 and Christmas.  As part of our listening and talking topic we have been learning to create small weekly presentations about “Our Weekend” to share with the class.  We make some notes in our jotter to help us remember the key parts we want to share.

In Health and Wellbeing we have been continuing to develop our abilities in balance and control through Parkour.  We have designed and created our own Parkour Agility courses using a variety of gym equipment to really test ourselves.  We have also been improving our rhythm and timing through the context of dance, in preparation for our Christmas Party.  We learned the steps to The Slosh, 5, 6, 7, 8, The Macarena, The Cha Cha Slide and The Superman Dance.  We even got to teach the entire school the dances in our whole school Christmas Danceathon.

We have also been learning about The Earthshot Prize as part of our Health and Wellbeing Topic. We have listened to all the nominations for each of the categories and voted for the ones we think are the best ideas.  Then we watched the prize ceremony to see if our guess was correct.

In art we have been creating winter mosaic scenes using torn paper in different shades of blue.  We will share some pictures once they have been completed.

In Science we took part in a whole school STEAM Challenge.  Our class had to make a reindeer that could fly.  We were given balloons, string paper and pegs.  This was a difficult challenge but some of us managed to do it.  We learned how to improve our experiment by understanding how friction and thrust works.

In French we have been investigating how people in France celebrate Christmas and learning French vocabulary linked to Christmas.

As part of our enterprise topic we created some “Melted Snowman Slime” and some green “Grinch Slime to sell at the Christmas Fair.  We also had some decorated CD decoration to sell too.  We were really pleased to see that all our items sold out in the first few ours of the fair and so we have managed to make a profit which will go into school funds to help buy more art resources.

We are also very pleased to hear that The Windyknowe Christmas Window Display, which was organised by Tesco Bathgate, won first prize!

We have also enjoyed our Christmas Party, Christmas Lunch and Movie morning since our last Blog Update.

We hope you all have a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year!!

P4PS Blog :) 20.12.21

We have had a very busy few weeks since we last posted. Christmas activities have been filtering into almost all of our lessons in preparation for Christmas this month:

We wrote to the Grinch to persuade him not to steal Christmas. We used our persuasive language to try and convince him to leave Christmas alone and explained why it was important to us.

A cosy Christmas movie morning was scheduled for all of us in class and we decided to watch Home Alone.

We have been making wreaths and Santa traps in our outdoor learning lessons with natural resources found in the forest/woods area.

The whole school carried out a STEM challenge – ours was to create a sleigh for the elves sleigh race. We had to make sure it travelled at least one metre without being touched. This was lots of fun in our groups.

Finally, we had our Christmas party and played games like musical arms, pass the parcel and corners.

We have had lots of fun in December and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it comes 🙂

Numeracy

We have been learning how to use the four operations with negative numbers.  We have moved onto algebra and solving algebraic equations using function machines and stories! Our times table knowledge has been very useful here!  We are continuing to enjoy our Transition project with Mrs Lundberg at Armadale Academy every week.

Literacy

In literacy we wrote some lovely Christmas stories and a letter to Santa persuading him not to cancel Christmas!  We were able to use persuasive language and present two sides of the argument.  In addition, we backed up our main points with valid reasons!

IDL

We created beautiful oil pastel drawings of a coral reef after learning about the damage that is being done to them through climate change.  We have also created newspaper reports in groups, detailing the damage caused to the ocean by extreme weather and nuclear testing.

Other areas

Mandarin – We have finished our block of Mandarin but we will continue to practise and use the vocabulary we have learnt over the last 8 weeks.

P.E – We have really enjoyed our block of dance, it has improved our listening skills and developed our co-ordination and rhythm to a higher level!

Other – We designed Christmas cards for the Sibbalds card competition and the winning entry was from our class!  Congratulations to them! Sibbalds commented on the high quality of entries they received from our class as a whole, so well done to all!

-We also worked in groups to design a fantastic STEM challenge as part of a whole school project.  Our part of the project involved creating a snowball launcher with very specific criteria which we met and exceeded!

Christmas – We are looking forward to our Christmas party tomorrow evening!  Everyone who is attending the party must have completed and returned a contact form as no child will be permitted to leave the party unaccompanied.  All children must be collected by an adult in the front playground at 8pm.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all from P7m!

We have enjoyed:

CH – I found Algebra interesting because it got my brain working.

LMcD – I liked rugby because it was fun learning how to pass properly.

RTM – I have enjoyed Algebra, it has been the best topic in Numeracy so far.

EM – I liked Netball and I am excited for the after school club starting.

HM – Mandarin was really interesting!
