Numeracy

We are continuing to enjoy our Transition project with Armadale Academy every week.  In class, we have been adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals by whole numbers.  Some of us have been teaching small groups in Primary 3 how to use our new probots.

Literacy

In literacy we are focusing on writing our own newspaper articles and learning about the features that we need to include and also how to use a formal tone in writing.  We continue to read daily in class and with our teacher twice a week.  We are making good progress with our inference skills!

Other areas

Last week we went up to Armadale Academy to take part in an outdoor learning workshop.  We split into groups and we got to do lots of fun things including: mountain biking, building hammocks, orienteering and fire building!  The fire building was very popular because we got to toast marshmallows at the end!  It was fun to see where we will be going to school next session and we got a flavour of the type of things we will do.  As well as some secondary teachers, there were S4 pupils helping at the workshops, so we were able to quiz them!

As part of our leaver’s assembly we are incorporating more drama, music and art into our IDL afternoons.  The countdown is on….

We have enjoyed:

O – I enjoyed making hammocks at the Academy, it was fun and relaxing when we got to lie in it!

E – It was fun to toast marshmallows and they tasted great!

A – I could easily sleep in a hammock, it is very relaxing.

R – It was great fun learning how to tie the hammocks in different ways.

Numeracy and Maths

We have been learning to order decimals on a number line. We have been looking at information handling and how to sort information using bar graphs and frequency tables. We have learned the importance of grouping data and presenting it in a clear way.

Literacy

So far in spelling this term, we have been learning common words such as Broxburn, practising, wonderful and difference. We have been doing different fun spelling tasks to help us to spell these words accurately. We have also been using spelling strategies such as syllabification and words within words to help us to spell our words correctly. In writing, we have been writing recounts. A recount is when you write in the past tense about something that you have done. In Listening and Talking we have also been focusing on recounts. We have been sharing our recounts with the rest of the class.

Spanish

In Spanish, we have been learning Spanish greetings and how to ask and answer the questions, What is your name? and What is your age?

PE

In PE we have started a block of Badminton. In Badminton instead of using a ball we use a shuttlecock. To play Badminton two people both have a racket and one shuttlecock and then you have to pass to your opponent over the net. You have to be fast and accurate. We have had great fun practising our Badminton skills.

Science

In Science we enjoyed an experiment about Friction and Forces. We investigated forces and friction by making a ramp for a car to travel down. We changed the material of the ramp and added others things such as salt to see what would happen to the speed of the car and how far it travelled. We found that the more friction was created, the less car travelled.

P5m Learn it! Log it! Blog it!

Welcome back everyone. We hope you had a good Easter.

We have been looking at our new maths topic which is data handling. We will be looking at bar graphs, line graphs, tally charts as well as different ways and methods of expressing data. We will be conducting our own surveys throughout the class as well as with other children where possible to collect different data sets.

In writing, we have been looking at retelling stories about people in our lives that we no longer and how we can best remember them and we have been structuring our writing to reflect this.

In PE, we are beginning to learn how to accurately serve and return shuttles and we have been looking at how to use an underarm clear as well as an overarm serve.

Please ensure that any letters are returned to school as soon as possible regarding our trip to dynamic earth in Holyrood on Tuesday 31st May.
