P6W Blog 27th May 2022

In literacy we have been continuing our learning block on non -fiction writing.  We have been researching how people in space make sandwiches and wash their hair, and then writing our own procedural reports.  We have also been working on persuasive writing by completing Buddy Applications.

In numeracy we have been revisiting, reviewing and revising the work we have covered in P6.  We have been reminding ourselves how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000, how to multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 and how to calculate foreign exchange currency. In Maths we have been investigating different ways to collect, organise and interpret data. We have looked Venn Diagrams, Carroll Diagrams, Line and Bar Graphs and Pie Charts. Ms Brody has been working with us on a Tuesday morning to help develop our understanding of 3D shapes by creating drawings and nets of familiar shapes.

In PE we have been developing our skills in athletics by practising the “hurl throw” and the “fling throw.” We even had our own mini challenge to see who was the class champion thrower.  We have also been learning the skills needed to play tennis in the lead up to the British tennis season.  We have been practising our forehand and backhand ground strokes and next week we will be learning how to serve the ball correctly to our opponent.

In RME we have been investigating how different religions interpret “Peace.” We discovered that Western religions focus more on community peace whilst Eastern Religions focus more on inner peace.  We created some art to represent the world symbols for peace including a 3D model of a peace dove.

We have also been on two class trips since our last blog!! We visited New Lanark Heritage Centre where were able to experience what learning was like in a Victorian classroom and have a tour of the mill.  We also visited Glasgow Science Centre where we were able to interact with the science exhibits and watch a 3D movie linked to our topic on Space in the IMAX Movie theatre.

In IDL we have been learning about Satellites. We carried out independent research to answer some key questions – When was the first one launched?  What are satellites mainly used for?  Which country has the most in space?   How do they work?  Can they be recycled?  What happens when they go wrong?  How do they get back to earth at the end of their lives?

In French we have been learning how to articulate our preferences for food.  This week we learned how to ask for different types of sandwiches . . . . . .“Je voudrais un baguette normale avec jambon et les tomates!”

In Health and Wellbeing we have been learning about different types of relationships including girlfriend/ boyfriend and how to keep ourselves and our information safe on the internet.

Numeracy

We got to meet Mrs Lundberg in person! She came to visit us here at Windyknowe and showed us all some more methods to use when calculating problems using fractions.  It was really nice to meet one of our future teachers at the Academy! We are continuing to solve problems using fractions, decimals and percentages.

Literacy

In literacy we have been writing reports.  We had our very own crime scene outside the P7 classrooms where poor Mr Swift suffered an untimely demise! We had to use clues found at the crime scene and the information given from the back story to try and solve the case! Of course, this was all make-believe, but we had great fun role playing as detectives and our written reports were fantastic!

Other areas

Congratulations to all of the P7 children who represented the school as part of Potted Sports and the Swimming Gala for the Bathgate Procession.  Each and every one of you did us proud!

We enjoyed creating French menus for our imaginary restaurants!  There are definitely some budding entrepreneurs amongst us!

Our leaver’s assembly preparations are well underway and we will be issuing lines to learn next week!

We have enjoyed:

F – The crime scene was fun and really mysterious!

F – I enjoyed doing P.E and watching the potted sports competition.

N – The crime scene setup was different and made writing really fun!

B – I really enjoyed being part of the Potted Sports Team because I got to play games with my friends.

Numeracy

We are continuing to enjoy our Transition project with Armadale Academy every week.  In class, we have been adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals by whole numbers.  Some of us have been teaching small groups in Primary 3 how to use our new probots.

Literacy

In literacy we are focusing on writing our own newspaper articles and learning about the features that we need to include and also how to use a formal tone in writing.  We continue to read daily in class and with our teacher twice a week.  We are making good progress with our inference skills!

Other areas

Last week we went up to Armadale Academy to take part in an outdoor learning workshop.  We split into groups and we got to do lots of fun things including: mountain biking, building hammocks, orienteering and fire building!  The fire building was very popular because we got to toast marshmallows at the end!  It was fun to see where we will be going to school next session and we got a flavour of the type of things we will do.  As well as some secondary teachers, there were S4 pupils helping at the workshops, so we were able to quiz them!

As part of our leaver’s assembly we are incorporating more drama, music and art into our IDL afternoons.  The countdown is on….

We have enjoyed:

O – I enjoyed making hammocks at the Academy, it was fun and relaxing when we got to lie in it!

E – It was fun to toast marshmallows and they tasted great!

A – I could easily sleep in a hammock, it is very relaxing.

R – It was great fun learning how to tie the hammocks in different ways.
