Fairtrade Competitions
The International Group have been busy judging the Fairtrade Mascot and Fairtrade Birthday card/cake competitions. Mr Mount from Livingston’s Fairtrade Town Group came in to help with the judging process too. It was really hard to pick the winners as the standard was so high! Thank you to all who participated in the competitions. We will announce the winners soon.
P4 visit the Wild About Scotland Bus
A very special bus came today from the Royal Zoological Society. Children from both P4 classes, as well as the Eco Group, had the opportunity to go on board the bus and learn about Scottish Wildcats and Beavers.
On the first floor their was a variety of activities aimed at learning about the plight of wildcats. There are only about 400 left in the wild.
On the top floor, the children learnt all about the trial release of beavers in Scotland and the pro’s and con’s of having them. They had a variety of challenges to complete about them include footprint identification and dam building.
P4 and P5 at the woodland naming ceremony
The name of the woods next to school has finally been revealed. The two year groups came up with lots of ideas and the Woodland Trust team picked ‘Wonderful Williamston Woods’. You can now see the new sign at the woods.
We all got to have celebratory snacks and ‘champagne’ afterwards. We also got to carry out an art activity, creating a colour pallete from items we found in the woods. A fantastic morning in all. A big thank you to the Woodland Trust team for organising these events for us.
Pupils Celebrate Commonwealth Day – 9th March 2015
To celebrate Commonwealth Day ( 9th March 2015) there was a celebratory occasion arranged involving young people from local schools at the Civic Centre. The event was opened by the Provost, Councillor Tom Kerr.
Shirees (P7) and Kaylah (P2) were chosen to represent Williamston Primary School .
They saw the raising of the Commonwealth Flag, listened to a fantastic performance from Howden St Andrew’s Primary School Choir and met lots of other children representing their own schools and Commonwealth Countries. The morning was finished off with a drink and a bite to eat as well as a photo shoot for the local news.
World Book Day – Sponsored Read
Scottish Children’s Book Awards Ceremony
A group of Primary 1-3 children were very lucky to be invited to the SCBA ceremony held in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh last Wednesday. Authors and illustrators of the three short listed books were in attendance. There was great excitement as the winner was announced, “Robot Rumpus”. The children were able to purchase a copy of their favourite book, which they had signed by the author. A fantastic experience!
P4 Trout Release
Primary 4 bid a fond farewell to their Brown Trout friends! We had successfully reared them from eggs to fry over the last few weeks and they were ready to swim free in the big, wide world. The trout fry were released into the Murieston Water, near the Co-op. We also had the opportunity to observe the river life and we found many interesting little bugs that will provide food for our trout. This project was supported by Forth Fisheries, Murieston Environmental Group and Dedridge Environment Ecology Project – many thanks to all involved!
National Fair Trade Schools Conference
Williamston Primary School was represented at the National Fair Trade Schools Conference by some of our International Group reps and our Head Boy and Head Girl. The conference took place on Monday 23rd February in the Glasgow City Chambers. Speakers included Martin Rhodes, the Director of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, Humza Yasouf MSP, the Minister for International Development and External Affairs, and Andy Ashcroft from the Kool Skools company. The star guest was Pamela L’Intelligent, a machinist from the Craft Aid company who had travelled all the way from Mauritius. She gave a first-hand account of the impact Fair Trade has had on her, her family and her community. Children participated in a Fair Trade song and quiz and the school was gifted a Fair Trade football. It was a very interesting and informative morning!
Fairtrade Fortnight
Fairtrade Fortnight has begun! The International Group held a special Fairtrade assembly last Friday to get everyone in the Fairtrade mood. The theme this year is to look at how Fairtrade helps farmers and their families and the focus is on Fairtrade tea, sugar and cocoa. There are two main competitions: design a Fairtrade mascot and design a Fairtrade birthday card or cake (as Fairtrade Fortnight is celebrating 20 years this year) – see your teacher or International Group Rep. for more details. Each class will also design a Fairtrade patch for our quilt picture. And don’t forget about Fairtrade Fridays when you are encouraged to bring in a Fairtrade snack – the winning class each week will get a certificate. Enjoy the Fairtrade fun!
