Photography Competition

The International group have launched their Scottish photography competition! The competition is open to all pupils from Nursery to P7 and runs from now until 15th May 2015. Children are invited to enter a photograph that represents Scotland in some way, for example a landscape, a landmark, an animal or food. More details are available from the International Group reps. This competition is run in partnership with the Universal School in Mumbai, and the winning entries will be included in exhibitions in both schools. Good luck and have fun!

P4 Book Project

The deadline for submitting the P4 book to the publishers is fast approaching. Mary Turner Thomson, our author, has sent us a copy of the book with our illustrations inserted and we are now busy editing it. We are also reviewing the story and illustrations sent by our partners in Mumbai. We really can’t wait to see the final product and share it with everyone at our official book launch at the end of April. Watch this space for more details….

Pupils Celebrate Commonwealth Day – 9th March 2015

To celebrate Commonwealth Day ( 9th March 2015) there was a celebratory occasion arranged involving young people from local schools at the Civic Centre. The event was opened by the Provost, Councillor Tom Kerr.

Shirees (P7) and Kaylah (P2) were chosen to represent Williamston Primary School .

They saw the raising of the Commonwealth Flag, listened to a fantastic performance from Howden St Andrew’s Primary School Choir and met lots of other children representing their own schools and Commonwealth Countries. The morning was finished off with a drink and a bite to eat as well as a photo shoot for the local news.

National Fair Trade Schools Conference

Williamston Primary School was represented at the National Fair Trade Schools Conference by some of our International Group reps and our Head Boy and Head Girl. The conference took place on Monday 23rd February in the Glasgow City Chambers. Speakers included Martin Rhodes, the Director of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, Humza Yasouf MSP, the Minister for International Development and External Affairs, and Andy Ashcroft from the Kool Skools company. The star guest was Pamela L’Intelligent, a machinist from the Craft Aid company who had travelled all the way from Mauritius. She gave a first-hand account of the impact Fair Trade has had on her, her family and her community. Children participated in a Fair Trade song and quiz and the school was gifted a Fair Trade football. It was a very interesting and informative morning!

Fairtrade Fortnight

SAM_1472Fairtrade Fortnight has begun! The International Group held a special Fairtrade assembly last Friday to get everyone in the Fairtrade mood. The theme this year is to look at how Fairtrade helps farmers and their families and the focus is on Fairtrade tea, sugar and cocoa. There are two main competitions: design a Fairtrade mascot and design a Fairtrade birthday card or cake (as Fairtrade Fortnight is celebrating 20 years this year) – see your teacher or International Group Rep. for more details. Each class will also design a Fairtrade patch for our quilt picture. And don’t forget about Fairtrade Fridays when you are encouraged to bring in a Fairtrade snack – the winning class each week will get a certificate. Enjoy the Fairtrade fun!
