P6 are getting into the Christmas spirit!

P6 are really getting into the Christmas spirit this week! On Tuesday we enjoyed a festive trip to the panto at Howden which was great fun! We’ve also started to rehearse for our Christmas carol concert next week. We are also finishing some Christmas crafts.

We’re still squeezing in as much of our usual timetable as we can, including reading, spelling and numeracy, so we’re very busy, but having lots of fun too!

P6 make woodland Xmas decorations!

This week in outdoor learning, P6 have been making Christmas decorations out of natural materials. We learned how to use a saw and workbench with Mr Lockhart, then sawed a tree branch to make a wood slice. We collected pine cones too. Next week we’ll be putting them together!
In maths P6 are working on common factors. We have also started new task maps for our reading books to help with our reciprocal reading skills. We’re also starting digital comprehension – we’ll be watching a film and using our comprehension strategies to infer, summarise and predict. Finally, we’re also continuing with our whole class novel study – Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz! So we’re incredibly busy this week!

P6 get ready for the Christmas fayre… and make pizzas too!

P6 have been getting ready for the Christmas fayre on Saturday! First we got all artistic and worked as a class to create our lovely display poster for the hall. Next, we made some chocolate biscuit truffles followed by sewing our amazing felt wreaths complete with pom poms and ribbon.

As well as making our truffles, we also tried our hand at making pizza – deep and crisp and even of course! All in all a truly creative and fun few days in P6!

We’ve also been busy practising for our P6-led mass tomorrow. In other learning we’re mastering our four operations in maths and continuing with our procedure writing in literacy.

We ho- ho- hope to see you all the fayre on Saturday!

P1 Family Campfire

Today was our turn to share stories with our parents and carers  around the campfire. We wrote and illustrated our own version of Dear Santa and we enjoyed reading it to our families. We then were gifted  Bookbug Bags and this time our parents and carers  read a story to us. We all loved a cosy cup of hot chocolate and roasting marshmallow on the campfire to make s’mores. What a fantastic day. Thank-you to everyone who was able to attend.

P6 create graphic novels and enjoy some s’mores!

For Book Week Scotland, P6 planned and authored their own graphic novel. They worked really hard on this for a full week, complete with a writing plan and page planner, along with their illustrations and speech bubbles. After all this hard work, they were able to share their books with their parents/adult at Outdoor Learning, where everyone enjoyed a hot choc and some s’mores too! The weather was dry and sunny, albeit cold, and everyone had a wonderful time! Thank you so much to everyone who came along! After the session we went back to class and everyone read their books to the rest of the class!

Remembrance service at West Calder war memorial

On Friday two P6 pupils and Mrs Sinclair joined staff and pupils from West Calder High School and other local schools to commemorate  Remembrance Day at the West Calder War memorial.

We laid our poppy wreath made by the whole class and took part in the service which was live streamed across the cluster. The brass musicians played the last post and the piper played whilst we laid our wreaths. It was a very lovely and respectful service, despite some very blustery winds.
