P1B w/b 24th April

We are very proud of how hard working P1B have been this week. They have followed school rules brilliantly and enjoyed learning experiences.

We have begun skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have also been learning how to work out the missing number in a calculation.

Khaleesi – I enjoyed counting songs.

Cameron – I liked doing maths group time.

Aaron – I like that we are allowed to do maths.

Luca – I liked watching counting songs and singing them.

Azmeer – I liked drawing number blocks.

We have been unscrambling words to put them into a sentence that makes sense. We also wrote a letter to the dragon.

JJ – I liked reading books.

We were all very excited to have a visit from a dragon. He left us a letter and asked us to help rebuild Fairyland. He also left us castle books to decorate. We learned about the features of a castle, drew our own castles and wrote a fantastic sentence.

Martyna – I liked learning about castles.

Following on from our Earth Day work last week, we were set a challenge to turn a toilet roll tube into a character. Please check out Seesaw to see the results.

Owen – I liked making toilet roll characters.

Faye – I like making a Rapunzel.

Rose – I liked making Cinderella.

Have a lovely long weekend!

P5B Weekly Blog 28th April 2023

This week we explored several articles linked to the care and protection of children. Article 9 (separation from parents) Children must not be separated from their parents against their will . Article 20 (children unable to live with their family) If a child cannot be looked after by their immediate family, the government must give them special protection and assistance. Article 21 (adoption) Governments must oversee the process of adoption to make sure it is safe, lawful and that it prioritises children’s best interests. Article 25 (review of treatment in care) children have the right to a regular review of their treatment, the way they are cared for and their wider circumstances.

Your children, as always, showed a good sense of understanding and empathy for children living through difficult circumstances.

P5 have been investigating the meaning of bible verse in our everyday life. In math are still developing their knowledge of grid method multiplication as well as being able to tell time and use time to plan events or travel. In literacy P5 are developing our knowledge of different sentence elements and how to link information through paragraphs. P5 are working hard with Mrs Morrison to learn how to create rhythmic musical pieces. In our outdoor learning this week we were busy trying to restock the bug hotel to create warm places for insects to live in our woodlands.  I hope everyone enjoys this holiday weekend and look forward to seeing the children back in school on Wednesday.

P4b weekly blog post 28/04/23

This week in numeracy, we started our unit on measurement.  We’ve been measuring items around the classroom/area in mm, cm and m’s.  We have also been using our knowledge of the 10 times table to convert between cm and mm.

In writing, we have been learning about adventure narratives.  We watched a short film about a lighthouse keeper where something goes wrong.  We used our comprehension skills to predict what might have gone wrong before we watched it, and to predict how the problem might be solved once we’d learnt what the problem was.  We have been planning our own class narrative based on this, adapting the story line to show our own ideas, and have begun writing a shared narrative together.

We created some optical illusion art work with Mrs Lea this week too, and we tapped in rhythms using drumsticks with Mrs Morrison.  We have also learnt days and months in Spanish.  In PE, we played different tig games, including the linking arms game we played last week, and we started our athletics unit, beginning with javelin.

Our highlights:

Jude: I loved doing javelin because I do athletics (including javelin) on Tuesdays.

Matteo: I enjoyed tapping the rhythms with Mrs Morrison because we had to look on the smartboard and it had red squares and yellow circles, which told us what to tap. Red squares represented one syllable and yellow circles represented two syllables.

Ishani M: I enjoyed doing the optical illusion art with Mrs Lea because it was fun and it was really hard to do but I really enjoyed it.

Layla: I liked maths because it was really fun and it was challenging.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

P6A Update

Dear families and loved ones,

We have had a really good week. We started our new project this week: bigotry and racism. Most of our work has been based around this. For literacy we have been reading about different influential figures across the world and their inspiring stories that have and continue to shape our world.

We are looking at Scotland, its people and how our country fits into the world. We are a small nation of a wonderfully diverse population and the children are loving learning about and challenging different issues here and across the world.

We have been using our notes from discussion and reading to inform our writing and I must say, I’m impressed by the level of engagement and work that has been produced.

The most important voices:

This week the children believe they have all been successful, confident, contributors and responsible. Here is what they have to say:

Successful Learner

“I used my numeracy skills when researching and learning about bigotry and racism” – Olivier

“I can explain what racism is” – Emily

“I learned how to play a new version of tig in PE” – Patrick

“I used my learning to write an information report on Rosa Parks” – Joshua

Confident Individual

“I worked on my own this week to write my information report” – Grant

“I was aware of my self when discussing my identity and talking about me” – Sam

“I understand that people have different beliefs and that not all those beliefs are good. I need to be self-aware” – Emmanuel

“I set a goal this week and showed that I care” – Sylvia

Effective Contributor

“I worked well with my friends this week when creating new games in problem solving” – Vanessa

“I like being involved with the class and talking with my friend” – Connor

“I worked well with a girl group and had my voice heard” – David

“I gave good answers and contributed to the SWOT analysis of the school grounds. I helped clean up outside the classroom fire door” – Myles

Responsible Citizen

“I helped others and worked hard to help the school in outdoor learning” – Amelia

“I was kind and showed others respect” – Filip

“I have been respectful and problem solved in literacy when I couldn’t write” – Adam

“I showed good listening skills when I needed to” – Emily

P2B Week Beginning 17th April 2023

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights from the Red Table:

Aaron said that he loved drama this week!  We explored the moral of the story, ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ and the children then acted out the story.  Aaron played the role of one of the Angry Villagers.  We made links with the ‘Zones of Regulation’.  He was in the Red Zone.

Ciara really enjoyed making vegetable soup this week.  She enjoyed it so much that she had 2 servings!  What a healthy girl! I hope you enjoy the photos below that show the chopping, peeling and cooking!

Amy said that her learning highlight was our religion lesson where Jesus appeared to some of the disciples after his death when they were fishing.  Jesus told them to cast their nets over the other side of the boat as they could not catch any fish.  Their nets became close to breaking when they did this!  They then cooked and shared the fish together.  The disciples remembered the Last Supper as Jesus took the bread and gave it to them and then did the same with the fish.

Reesa loved a story we were studying this week called, ‘Who is our New Teacher?’ We looked at a different element of it each day and it linked with our comprehension and writing lessons.  Reesa loved it when Mrs Devlin pretended to be the Green Dragon and answered the childrens’ questions during a Hot Seat activity.

Georgia- Rose liked playing ‘Monkey Tig’ during PE.

Emily-Ann said she enjoyed learning how to use the dictionary.  The children were first introduced to the dictionary before the Easter holidays.  They know that the dictionary is organised into alphabetical order, that it can help with the spelling of words and that it also gives the meaning of words.  They played ‘Who can find it first?’ where they had to work with their partner to open the dictionary at a specific section and then they practised copying out meanings.

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was when we went to the woodlands to make arrays for the 2 Times Tables, using natural materials (photos below).  This term we will be focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 Times Tables and links with division.  You will see this reflected in the homework also.

Congratulations to Evana, our Hot Chocolate award winner for this week!

Primary 5A weekly update: 21st April 2023

Dear families of P5A,

We have settled back into school really well and we are now so excited to be in our final term of P5!

This week we have been revising our knowledge of the grid method to multiply large numbers and focusing on building our quick times-tables recall! We have been working really hard on the 8 and 9 times table in particular and we have used the counting stick to help us with this! Kuba said his favourite part of maths this week was playing ‘grid method KABOOM!’ with his partner and testing Jacob and Max on their multiplication recall with the counting stick! Leo liked playing the Lego multiplication game too. Farrah was also really proud this week because she learnt her entire 9x table- well done Farrah! Lots of the class also mentioned loving the ‘Esti-mysteries’ which we have been attempting as part of our maths starter challenge.

During literacy this week we looked at the definition of some of our tricky WordBoost words and focused on our writing focus of Explanation. We planned our writing out carefully, considered the features of an explanation and then wrote our very own. We wrote an explanation about where potatoes come from and Miss Ventisei thinks we did a great job! Well done P5A!

On Monday we had another recap of our Zones of Regulation and wrote a plan of action which included lots of different coping skills that we might use when we are emotionally dysregulated. We have kept our plans in our trays so that we have access to them whenever we may need to.

Throughout R.E. we have been focused on the Bible. We were learning about all of the different books that make up the Bible and we explored lots of different verses and their meanings. We also selected our own meaningful Bible chapter or verse and wrote a short reflection about the special message that the verse is trying to tell us. We enjoyed thinking about our own personal values and considering which passages of the Bible mean the most to us.

On Wednesday, we started our new topic. This topic is creative and child-led so we decided to plan together our ideas for the term. We had lots of fantastic suggestions of upcycling different things, going on litter picks and many more. Miss Ventisei is using our ideas to draft a plan for the term and we are looking forward to this new challenge!

The entire class have said that their favourite part of this week was our trip to John Muir Country Park in Dunbar. It was a beautiful day and we were lucky enough to go to the beach, explore the woodland area and play in the large park! We were also lucky enough to see lots of wildlife including different birds, animal dens and alpacas! It was a fantastic day all round and most of us are all desperate to go back!

This week our Hot Chocolate Winner was Kuba! He tried so hard with his writing this week and consistently demonstrated our school values all week. Congratulations and well done Kuba!

Well done and thank you for another fantastic week P5A! Have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 21st April 2023

This week we have been learning all about plants. We talked about what plants need to grow and then we planted some sunflower seeds and cress seeds. The cress has already started to grow. We learned about the names of the parts of a plant and made special lift the flap books. In writing, we wrote the instructions to plant a seed and we had to make sure they were all in the correct order.

In maths, we have been learning to read the number words. We played the teddy game on Topmarks to help us to practise. We also had to match the numbers and words on our sheet. It was a bit confusing with four and five but we know we have to look at the whole word to see what one is correct.

In RE, we learned about Eid and we made special lanterns.

For Outdoor Learning we went up to the Woodland. We practised our fire pit safety rules and then had some choosing our own learning time. Some people built a den, some climbed trees and some people cooked some delicious meals in the mud kitchen.

We decided to change the classroom around this week and we have created a construction area. We helped Miss Stebbing to move some things around and told her what things we thought should change.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Joshua – I enjoyed going into the MUGA at break time.

Harald – I enjoyed playing in the Woodland.

Lillian – I liked learning about Eid.

Eve – I liked learning about seeds and colouring the flower in.

Kacper – I liked planting the seeds.

Alexander – I liked drawing.

Miss Stebbing – I enjoyed being out in the Woodland and I was very impressed with how everyone remembered all the rules for the fire pit.

Congratulations to Mohitha who is our hot chocolate winner this week.
