P1a’s Learning Highlight week beginning 24/1/19

P1a all worked so hard at  being consistently ready, respectful and safe that they each were awarded a ready, respectful and safe certificate on Friday.

The pupils also had to collect  100 objects at home and bring them into class. We loved showing each other what we had found and Caelan even said Miss Smith could keep some of the tiny hair clips he had brought in ! ( She did not but thanked him anyway ).

Learning Highlights:

Mason: I liked making the dragons on Monday for learning our d sound.

Sophia: I liked making crowns with my P7 buddy because we had to make sure each strip had ten pieces and I liked using the stickers.

Pixie: I liked writing what we can now do when we are in Primary 1. Pixie wrote that she can now make toast by herself !

P3B Learning Highlights Week Beginning 27th January

Over the last few weeks we have been learning about the SHANARRI Wellbeing Indicators. We learned about ways that we can be Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included. This week we have made SHANARRI Characters. They had special skills that help look after our wellbeing.

In Maths, we learned about rounding to the nearest 10. We played lots of games to practice this. Our favourite was “Around the World” as it was a challenge. We have continued to practice our times tables too.

As part of literacy this week we learned about alliteration and wrote sentences in Scots using alliteration. We drew pictures of these sentences. We also  learned about Robert Burns and answered questions about him in our groups.

For Spanish this week we learned how to say different body parts and began to learn “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in Spanish which is “cabeza, hombros, rodillas y dos pies”.

During PE on Thursday we were doing our balances with our learning partners.  On Tuesday we played with the bats and tennis balls. We had to make sure they didn’t hit the ground.

We learned about Chinese New Year and made dragon masks.

Our Learning Highlights:

“I learned about Chinese New Year. That there are loads of celebrations.” – Declan

“I enjoyed colouring the dragon masks for Chinese New Year” – Sophia

“I enjoyed designing my SHANARRI character and making the words for the wall” – Rabail

“I liked when we were doing the counter balances during PE. You had to lean.” – Aeryn

“We got to make up a balance and me and Jayden made one where I was doing a crab and Jayden went over me. I enjoyed it” – Amelia

“We did a maths quiz with adding and times tables. “ – Reece

“We did Scots writing about an animal and had to use adjectives and verbs and then when we were done writing we had to draw a picture and colour it in. It was funny” – Sophie-Leigh

This week we have been completing the Daily 10 Maths activity to practise rounding and 3 times table.  We have stated to think about our new topic which is the Egyptians.  We filled in a KWL grid and we have lots of things we want to learn.  We finished our SHANARRI topic by creating characters with special skills.  In writing we wrote poems about a dug, a coo or a tod and we had to use Scots words.  With Mrs Ogurno we listened to the poem ‘A dug , a dug’.  We learned the months of the year in Spanish and next wee it is Scotland Loves Languages Week so listen out for us practising lots of different languages.

P4a

Curriculum areas and subjects

In Maths, we were multiplying by 4. We used different strategies to help us to figure out the answers. We used equal grouping, repeated addition and 2 times table facts. Some groups also explored how to use the formal method to multiply.

Interdisciplinary learning

We did a design challenge. We had to make a candle that is 15cm high. We also needed to make a flame that can move. It was really hard to make the flame move so we had to try different materials.

The ethos and life of the school

At the Scottish Assembly we got to sing our song, ‘Donald where’s your troosers.’ We were fantastic!

P1B Post

Week Beginning 20.1.20

P1B highlights:

Layla – “Doing highland dancing was my favourite.”  As part of our celebrations of Burns Day, the children were watching highland games on the Smartboard and also some people doing highland dancing.  They had good fun joining in.  Other Burns Day fun involved designing tartan umbrellas (for our ‘u’ phonic sound) and performing ‘Ally Bally Bee’ at assembly today.  The link is as follows in case your child wants to perform it for you at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNsqZEKkzRQ

Zac – “I liked making our own clubs.”  This week the children have been learning what it means to feel ‘Included’.  We listened to a story called, ‘Strictly No Elephants!’ about a child and their pet who did not feel very welcome at a club.  We decided to make Welcome posters for our classroom door so that everyone who comes in to our room feels included.  We also created our own made up clubs during story writing and decided the name, when and where it was going to be.  The clubs ranged from ‘The Mermaid Club’ to ‘The Teddy Club’!

Paige – “I liked the shapes in the woods.”  P1B have been learning to recognise and make 2D shapes this week.  We searched for them naturally in the woods.  We discovered there were many circles there!

Maeve and Mrs Devlin’s Highlight – “The Assembly.”  As mentioned in this post, the children performed Ally Bally Bee at the assembly today.  I was so proud of them!  This was also my highlight!

P6A Learning Highlights 24.1.20

Primary 6A have had a busy week as we continue to get ready for our upcoming Burns Supper next week.

Curriculum Areas & Subjects

In Maths, we completed an assessment to check our knowledge of co-ordinates and angles.  We have also been working on decimals, where we have been introduced to thousandths.

Interdisciplinary Learning

As part of our learning about Robert Burns, we completed a comprehension activity.  We looked at tartan and had a go at designing our own.  We practiced in the hall for our Burns Supper.  In spelling we were learning some Scottish words.

Ethos & Life of the school

We took part in the senior Scottish assembly this morning where we sang “The World Must be Comin tae an end”.  Mrs Egan and Mrs McKissack performed the poem “A Dug a Dug” which was funny.  We liked hearing the performances of the other classes and enjoyed the shortbread that we had as a special treat.

Opportunities for Personal Achievement

Andrew attended Milkshake this week for going over and above in his learning.  Carla has been making clothes this week, and we might get a sneak preview at our Burns Supper.

P1B Post

Week Beginning 13.1.20

P1B highlights:

Reyansh – “Popping bubbles and hitting the balloons in the air was fun.” We welcome our new pupil Reyansh to our St John Ogilvie family and hope he is very happy here and settles in well.  The children were learning about the sound ‘b’ this week.  Each time they popped a bubble they had to say the ‘b’ sound.  We then had a balloon party just for the fun of it!  (Thank you Mrs Lafferty for supplying the balloons!)

Freya – “I liked making boats using 2D shapes.”  The boys and girls have been learning to recognise 2D shapes and their proprieties this week.  We then made boats (linking our phonics) using these shapes.  We could draw them freely, draw around shape templates our use our cutting skills and cut shapes out (or a combination of all).

Matteo – “I liked using sticks in the woods to do our sums.”  On Thursday when we were in the woodlands, we took up some dice, white boards and markers.  We rolled the dice and using natural materials, created sums.  Unfortunately the rain started and began to rub out our create work so we had to abandon this activity and move on to our free play.

Jonah – “Designing dens was good.”  This week P1B have been learning about what it means to be safe.  The children had so many ideas and we put them into a spider diagram.  Next we went into groups and designed dens (cosy and makes us feel safe inside) and presented our ideas to the class.  Great teamwork P1B!

Mrs Devlin’s Highlight – My highlight has to be linked to Jonahs.  The children worked well together and included their groups’ ideas.  We had bunting, plant pots, pillows, ladders and all sorts of imaginative features in our dens.  I was impressed how the children encouraged one another when presenting back to the class.
