P1B Weekly Highlights Week Beginning 9th November

We have had another busy week in P1B.

We have been learning the sound ‘K’. We can write the letter, we can say words with the sound and we can say where the sound is made in our mouths.  We designed kites using paper, string and straws.

In maths we have been learning what + and = means.  We have been adding sets of objects together and used objects to make addition sums.

We read Percy Park Keeper story and went in to the woods to build new houses for the animals.

We have been learning about Robots.  We read the story Robot Rumpus and then designed our own robot which would be able to help us.

We programmed Bee bots and made them move.

It was world Kindness Day today and also Children In Need.  We designed our own Pudsey Bear and we created a heart to give to someone special.

We read the story ‘Kindness is Cooler Mrs Ruler and wrote a sentence about how we are kind.  We remembered to use a full stop at the end of our sentence.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all again on Monday for another busy, fun filled week of learning.

Primary 7A – Weekly Update

Dear Parents.

Here is an update on some of  our learning over the past week:

The highlight of the week, as chosen by the children, was our Origami lesson.  We looked at the origins of Origami and also what the word means, then we took to work and tried to create some Origami birds of our own.  It was very tricky, however after a lot of hard work and retracing of steps, many of the children managed to create the finished article.  Others were not quite so successful but thankfully nobody gave up and everyone persevered right until the end.  In fact, some of the children were so keen to improve their skills, they took paper home with them to practise and brought different examples in the next day.  Here is a picture of a completed bird:

Another learning highlight this week, was our outdoor learning.  Last week we worked in groups to create our own games, this week we spent time with another group, teaching them our game and playing theirs.  Lots of fun was had by everyone (including Mrs Craig).

In Maths this week, we worked on finding the perimeter of shapes, including compound shapes.  We also continued with our work on decimals with Mrs Morrison and finished our posters for the Maths wall with Mrs Craig.

For Remembrance day, we wrote poems, made poppy pictures and took part very respectfully in the 2 minute silence.  Here are some examples of our work:

Finally, we helped Mrs McKissack to celebrate a very special birthday today by signing Happy Birthday over teams.  We hope she enjoys her socially distanced celebrations over the weekend.

We wish you all a lovely weekend and we will be back with another update next Friday.

A big Thank You!

Lots of people have experienced a birthday in lockdown, now including me!  I have had a lovely morning with lots of homemade cards and a wonderful surprise digital assembly where all of the children signed Happy Birthday to me as we are not allowed to sing.  It felt very appropriate to have happened on World Kindness Day and further confirms how wonderful our SJO Family is!

Primary 7B Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

Here’s an update for this week’s learning in P7B:

In writing we have been working on instructions.  Since we successfully made Origami frogs in art, we have written instructions on how to make your own jumping frogs using time connectives and imperative verbs.  There were some excellent examples of clearly written instructions and some people included useful diagrams to help. IKEA could learn a thing or two from us!

In maths we continue to use the RLPS (Real Life Problem Solving) App which puts maths problems into everyday situations and scenarios and we have to use different strategies to solve them.  This week we used reasoning and guess, check and improve strategies to solve a school fundraising problem involving tombola, prizes and profit and loss.

West Lothian are holding a Sumdog Competition this week which runs up till 8pm next Thursday (19th). There are 1000 questions to answer and I will give P7 the chance to particpate in class but to complete all questions, they’ll need to do some at home.  I will give prizes for good effort and special prizes to anyone who manages to finish in the Top Ten!

We have completed the SNSA Practise assessment and will complete the Literacy and Mathematics assessments soon.  These are standardised assessment used right across Scotland and they will give us individual strengths and targets to work on before the move to Secondary school.

We helped Mrs McKissack share an important BIG birthday by signing Happy Birthday using British Sign Language.

Happy Birthday to Mrs McKissack, I’ve still got a few years until I catch up to her!

Now we’ll hear an update from this week’s Lead Learners:

On Tuesday in PE we did orienteering with a partner to find different cards with countries on them, we got a clipboard to write down the one we had found.

On Wednesday we did numeracy in textbooks and played maths games. In art this week we made origami water bombs you could fill them up with water it was fun and enjoyable. We had some excellent water bombs and we were really excited to make them.

Thursday we had PE again and this time we have done team building exercises. We had a hoola hoop and had to balance in it on our fingers in groups of 5 – 6 and in the end we got to play a game.

Donnie and Kashvita

Have a great weekend everyone,

Mr McGurn and P7B.

P2B Week Beginning 9th November

P2B have had a full week!  I cannot believe it is Friday already!  Here are our best bits:

Millie enjoyed playing ‘Hungry Hippos’, a game we played with our partner using Numicon Pieces and a pencil.  Mrs Devlin and some children who were pretending to be teacher, called out subtraction sums and we had to race to find the answer!  It was FUN!

Reyansh liked our phonics lessons this week, in particular our learning about the ‘igh’ sound.  The activity he enjoyed the most for this learnig was when he had to write ‘igh’ words on the eyelashes of an eye (sight) and fill the iris full of colour.  He chose to use brown tissue because he has brown eyes.

Freya loved showing the class the rug she made for our Virtual Classroom.  It was a beautiful heart shape.  Thank you to all who sent furniture.  Look out for it over the coming weeks as we will need to take turns.

Alexa liked it when we collected Autumn leaves in the woodland and then sorted their colours.  We transferred the information into a bar chart.  We found that brown leaves were mostly collected and green leaves were least collected.

Mia and DaisyDee were our Lead Learners this week.  They report enjoying making poppies for Remembrance Day and ‘oi’ phonics learning.  They also identified a target for the class to work on this week which was, ‘To push our chairs in when we are not sitting on them (as some children were forgetting).  Thank you girls for the positive contribution you made to our class this week as our Lead Learners!

Mrs Devlin’s Highlight was the Acrostic Poem we wrote this week called ‘Autumn’.  We used a dictionary to inspire us when we found it tricky to think of words that started with the letters A U T U M N.  There was a roar of laughter when we found the word ‘Nappy’ but through discussion realised this would not be a good choice of word.  Together we complied the poem as a class and had the choice to either copy it down fully, copy it down in part and then come up with our own ideas or else write our own poem completely.  I was so impressed with what the children came up with!  See the photos below for some examples.

Primary 6A Weekly update

Another busy week in primary 6 with lots of fun and learning together.

Lead learners: Our lead learners Erin and Maria set 3 targets for us to work on this week. This has helped us to focus on being ready, respectful and safe. They were also responsible for awarding house points for achieving the targets set.

Health and Well being: We have been working with Mrs McLaughlin to discuss our emotions and what triggers us.

Literacy: This week we created wanted posters for Guy Fawkes after learning about the Gunpowder plot. We also discussed advice for keeping safe when using fireworks.

Maths: We completed an assessment on decimals to see how much we could remember from last term and have been successfully learning how to convert decimals into percentages and fractions. We were also finding a fraction of a shape and a number. We know our times tables help when finding a fraction of a number, therefore, we have been working on our tables too by playing around the world.

Art: Last week we used oil pastels to create our Halloween cat pictures and this week we used paint and oil pastels to create our firework art.

Outdoor learning: We have been working in pairs and trios to create spider webs using sticks and wool. After trial and error we learned the importance of working together to hold everything in place and tie secure knots.

Over and above: Well done to our over and above winner Erin!

Have a great weekend and stay safe,

Mrs Roy

Primary 7B Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

Another busy week in P7B with lots of learning going on.

In Numeracy we have been multiplying by 2 digit numbers and learning different ways to approach this, why not ask us about the grid method and share with us how you learned to multiply by 2 digits? Tables really helps with this so encourage us to keep working on them and even listen to the times tables songs – link posted in Teams.

In Maths we were learning about capacity and managed to accurately measure specific amount using measuring jugs, beakers and measuring cylinders.

In writing, we wrote bonfire/fireworks themed poems using onomatopoeia and similes and metaphors and beforehand learned all about the Gunpowder plot.

Our Japan topic has now started and we began by finding Japan in an atlas and then identified major cities, neighbouring countries and the seas surrounding Japan.

For art we tried to make origami cranes but some of the folds are really quite tricky.  We won’t be beat though and will try again.

Finally here is our Lead Learners’ take on the week:

This week we learnt how to do sign language for something we can’t tell you about until next Friday! Also in maths we learnt to times ten and units by tens and units also hundreds tens and units. For Topic we attempted to count to 10 in Japanese with some amazing origami. For maths on Friday we were measuring litres and Millimetres. On Thursday we learnt about Bonfire/Fireworks safety. Also we enjoyed finding out the story behind Guy Fawkes and the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday.

Lead Learners Alex and Brooklyn.

Have a good weekend everyone,

Mr McGurn and P7B

P5B – WB 02.11.20

Dear readers,

Another busy week has come to an end and here is a little note to keep you posted on how we have been spending our time in school.

The beginning of the week was spent learning about our new spelling words, trickier by the minute, and also practising them so them we can get a 10/10 score in our weekly spelling tests. Also in Literacy, we have learned more about adverbs and did our reading comprehension about a new chapter of the Secret Garden, chapter 7. The reading comprehension questions can be very tricky and we have been trying really hard to truly understand what Mrs Valente expects us to answer.

Our Writing session was very enjoyable and very different from what we do every week, since we have been asked to make a big A3 poster to warn people about the dangers of fireworks and how to be careful about them. Everyone seemed to enjoy doing it, which was great!🖼🎨😍👍

In Maths, this week has been dedicated to working on subtraction, from very easy sums at the beginning of the week to really amazingly challenging 5 digit and beyond ones! We all loved it!

We have changed our seats to try and behave even better and because some of us had been absolutely brilliant with their behaviour already, they even got to seat beside a person of their choice. Mrs Valente has warned that all the boys and girls need to behave in a way that they deserve this treat and therefore seats will be changed again if people forget about that. We have been trying hard to work as a team to achieve our goal of becoming one of the most well behaved classes in school and because of that Mrs Valente has to keep on reminding us about that.😊

We have ended up our week with our usual Big Maths, beat that, our spelling assessments and an amazing Art activity, our Autumn leaves wreaths. It was very good to see boys and girls choosing carefully their leaves and arranging them according to the instructions to make fantastic wreaths to decorate our classroom!

Throughout the week we have also, as always, been working on our listening skills by watching Newsround to keep us well informed of what is happening in the world and also to show how good we are at listening. That is why many of us like to take notes to be able to answer to Mrs Valente’s questions and get lots of points for our houses!

This was only a bit of what our week looked like because we have, as always, been super busy bees!😂

We would like to congratulate our Hot Chocolate girl for her amazing behaviour and also for always following the school’s rules of being ready, respectful and safe! Well done, Hanna!

Our notes home have been awarded to people who have contributed everyday to make our class, which is a bit like our family outside of our homes, a better place! well done to Connor, Rebecca, Caiden and Zak!

We say goodbye for now wishing you all a great weekend full of joyful moments with your families!

Primary 5B and Mrs Valente 😘😘😘😘
