Primary 1A Learning Highlights 22nd April 2022

It has been a very busy and exciting start to our last term of Primary One.  We have been practising our common words and writing words using all the sounds we know.  We wrote a sentence to tell Miss Stebbing which book she should read and most people chose the Three Little Pigs.  For our Word Boost book we read The Smartest Giant in Town and we have heard our boost words lots of times this week.

In maths we are learning to count in 5s and we listened to a song to help us with this.  It is quite fast but we are getting better each day.  We have been doing lots of different addition sums this week and we are trying to remember to count on from the biggest number.

On Thursday a Friendly Dragon visited our classroom and left us a scroll!  It was asking us for help to rebuild Fairyland as it had disappeared because people are not reading enough fairy tales and believing in them.  We wrote letters back to the dragon to say we would love to help.  We have also been looking for the dragon and lots of us thought we saw it in the playground at lunchtime.  We think it might be watching us from up in the Woodland. When we came in on Friday the letters were not in the post box and there was another scroll, a pot, magic soil and magic seeds!  The dragon told us that it was so happy when it was reading our letters that little bits of fire had come out of its mouth and it had burned them. He then asked us to plant the magic seeds and make some leaves for Jack’s beanstalk. We are wondering what is going to grow in the pot!

Here are some of our personal highlights from this week:

Caleb – I liked playing with the lego.

Ollie – I liked playing with my friends.

Jiade – I liked playing in the cinema.

Jack – I liked playing with the marble run.

Rory – I liked playing with the cinema.

Diana – I liked playing at outdoor learning.

Laura – I liked playing with everything.

P2B Week Beginning 18th April 2022

We have had a fantastic first week back to school. The children have enjoyed sharing news about their Easter holidays with the class and catching up with friends.

We have started looking at the 2 times table this week and used playdough to make arrays as a visual to help us understand. We have  also been learning more Spanish, focusing on the weather and played lots of games to help us remember them. In PE we have been doing some more gymnastics, here are some great action shots:

Highlights from the Green Table:

Alex – I liked reading the new book in class called The Magic Finger. I am excited to find out what happens next.

Vinayakarthik – I liked to find the blue words all around the room with ue sound in them. I found them all and won 2 house points.

Flynn – I liked doing the Number Talks because yesterday I got it right and today. We listen to clues and get rid of numbers that are not the right answers and then we guess which one is right out of the left over numbers.

Ellie-May – I liked PE doing the gymnastics. I liked climbing the ladder to go on the monkey bars.

Georgia – I liked learning about the magic e and doing the secret code spelling.

Well done to Vinayakarthik for winning the Hot Chocolate Award and Alexander for being the Reading Champion.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Lawrence

P2A Week Beginning 28th March

This week in class, our learning highlights have been:

Our special learning about Holy Week, the week before Jesus died.  There was much drama in class and in the playground as we recalled this important learning.  The children enjoyed riding donkeys, getting their feet washed and eating and drinking as they took part in The Last Supper.  (As part of keeping safe, we used 2 loaves for The Last Supper, one for “Jesus” to hold up and break and one for eating.  We also had our own cup of “wine”).

We also completed some beautiful art.  The children used their senses to explore seeds and flowers.  The soft texture of the flowers and the lovely smells and bright colours were noted.  The children found the patterns on the seeds interesting too.  They have taken home some sunflower seeds if they wish to grow them at home.

The biggest highlight of all has to have been giving the grass heads a hair cut in the playground.  We were careful not to undo our great work and make them bald in all the excitement.  Although I did reassure the children that the grass will continue to grow with sunlight and water.

We also learned about taking care of a baby and what they need to grow up to be healthy too.  The children enjoyed playing with dolls and pretending to bath them, dress them, feed them and take them for walks.

My highlight, apart from the special Holy Week lessons, was the April Fools joke I played on the class on Friday.  I told them that Mrs McKissack was so impressed with our grass head haircuts that she wanted us to cut all the grass in the playground with scissors!  They were so disappointed to hear it was a joke!

I hope you all have a lovely Easter break and I will see you all on our return, Tuesday 19th April.

P1A Learning Highlights 1st April 2022

This week we have been learning the sound ‘igh’.  We had an Easter hunt to find words and then we had to circle the correct answer on our sheet.  We had great fun!  In writing we had to write a sentence about which Easter egg we thought was the best.  We are getting very good at using the word ‘because’.

In maths we have been practising our subtraction strategies through word problems.  We also decorated some egg shapes and made sure the pattern was symmetrical.

In RE we have been learning about the events in Holy Week.  We made beautiful crosses using the paint dabbers.  We think they look like stained glass windows.

We finished the term with time up in the woodlands with our buddies.  We had hot chocolate and marshmallows at the fire pit.  We also had an Easter egg hunt and some time for play.  Thank you to Mr McGurn, Mrs Dwane and Mrs Carlyle for helping to organise it all.

Have a lovely Easter holidays everyone!

Weekly update 1.4.22

Dear Families

This week has been another busy week in Primary 3.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been focusing on exposition writing (persuasive). We created a piece of writing together as a whole class, focusing on the importance of staying safe in the sun (we are disappointed the weather has turned). Then we created an individual exposition about being safe on our bikes, skateboard or skates. We have learned the correct structure and the importance of giving a reason for our arguments. Our last step was to create posters using our arguments.

Maths

We have continued to work with money this week. Focusing on adding 2 amounts within £1. We were fairly confident with this.

We also kept practising our times tables knowledge with bingo, it was really fun!

IDL

We finished our class novel (George’s Marvellous Medicine) and came up with alternative endings.

Using our class novel as our inspiration, we completed a science experiment to see whether items would float or sink in water and in oil.

Pupil Highlight

Millie – I enjoyed doing P.E with Mrs Lafferty. Especially the monkey bars.

Paige – I liked making a folder to store all my loose paper.

Jude – I enjoyed P.E, we are doing gymnastics.

Mariam – I enjoyed April Fool’s day, Mrs Robson fooled us with a spelling test!

Daniel – I enjoyed the science experiment.

We are all now looking forward to our Easter holiday.

Easter Wishes

Dear Parents/Carers and families,

On behalf of the staff of St John Ogilvie PS, I would like to thank you for your continued support over this past term.  Hopefully, despite a couple of days of unsettled weather, we will have some bright and sunny days for you to enjoy with your children over the Easter Break.

All staff and pupils return on Tuesday 19th April and we look forward to welcoming everyone back then, hopefully with a little more normality than the past couple of years.

I wish you all a happy and holy Easter.

Jesus, my Lord and my God,

let me rejoice in the Resurrection;

let me know you now by faith.

Jesus, I give thanks to you

for life and life eternal.

  Amen

With best wishes Mrs McKissack

P6A Weekly Update 1st of April 2022

This week’s Children Rights were linked to help and support Government should give to Support Parents.

Article 5 (parental guidance and a child’s evolving capacities): Governments must respect the rights and responsibilities of parents and carers to provide guidance and direction to their child as they grow up, so that they fully enjoy their rights. This must be done in a way that recognises the child’s increasing capacity to make their own choices.

Article 18 (parental responsibilities and state assistance): Both parents share responsibility for bringing up their child and should always consider what is best for the child. Governments must support parents by creating support services for children and giving parents the help they need to raise their children

Your children were able to talk about all the things you do for them everyday and how proud they are of their parents loving and supporting them as much as you do. Your child really appreciates everything you do.

In math we can all divide and multiply using percentages. We also took place in a Sumdog Times Tables Challenge which they all really enjoyed as well as achieving high scores.

Our persuasive writing this week has been focussed on persuading parents and government that all children should learn to swim. These will be completed after the holidays.

In RE this week we have explored Jesus tribulations during Holy Week and have looked forward to the beginning of Ramadan tomorrow. We also made prayer cards for Peace in Ukraine. This week in art we created beautiful sunflower art which your child will bring home to you today.

Next term Primary 6 will be looking towards their future responsibilities in Primary 7. Preparing to be Primary 1 buddies, taking part in elections for House Captains. They will also be taking part in Bikeabilty training at the end of May/beginning of June.

We have had a long but busy term and look forward to new, fun challenges when we return

from Easter Break. Have a lovely holiday.

P4A Learning this week : 1st April

Another fun week of learning in P4A.  We have been very busy this week where we have learned all about the Easter story – from Jesus arriving in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday through to his Resurrection.

Our First Communion boys and girls enjoyed visiting St Peters on Wednesday where Fr Simon showed us all different parts of the church and explained lots of the different parts of Mass.  We also talked about how to receive Holy Communion.  We were all able to share our knowledge with Fr Simon as we have been listening very respectfully and practicing our prayers during our Communion lessons.

For our exposition writing, we explored different verbs for thinking, feeling and sensing.  We worked with partners to sort the words and used some of them in an activity.

We made Easter cards with moving parts and are delighted that our Roman Pots are now finished and we are taking them home.

Everyone is looking forward to our Easter holidays and we are crossing our fingers (and toes) for some nice weather.

Our hot chocolate winner this week is Aarya.  Well done on being Ready, Respectful and Safe all week.

P5A Learning Highlights Week Beginning 28.3.22

Pupil Highlights:

Inaya: I enjoyed watching Encanto as a class reward for handing in our HW.

Aoife: I liked pranking Miss Smith on April Fool’s and dancing with Kayla in p2.

Olivier: I liked using the language of opinion to express my view on whether or not crisps are the best snack, whether children should have to wear school uniform, and should Mother’s Day be banned.

Daisy: I liked doing the prodigy assignment.

Vanessa: I like doing the HW this week.

Hot Chocolate Winner this week: It is without a doubt that the hot chocolate winner is Adam because he has consistently shown respect and responsibility towards pupils and adults this week. He has also shown an excellent understanding in our unit Exposition. His teacher and his class is very proud of him.
