P6

We have worked hard this week on researching UK landmarks. We used the information to create power point slides to showcase our learning and learn form our friends at the same time.

We have been exploring the industries that support our Scottish Islands economies. Some of these include agriculture, forestry, tourism and wildlife.

Everyone enjoyed the Masterclasses on Thursday learning about cities from around the world. We had Cape Town, Washington, New York, Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Rome and Moscow.

P6 voted for their star of the week this week providing evidence for their choice. I am delighted to announce that we have a tie! Congratulations to Emma and Anna for being our stars of the week.

Building our early morning learning at Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast club children got off to an early start in “building their learning” this morning.  There was huge excitement when they discovered a box of Lego in the cupboard and as soon as they had eaten their breakfast, they came over to start creating!  Dot in the Kitchen very kindly donated some trays for them to use to keep the bits tidy on the tables.  We are looking forward to seeing some lovely masterpieces from them.

Meanwhile, some of our other “early learners” worked to piece together cogs and to see how they worked together to make the different cogs spin.  There was a lot great learning going on, well before the bell even rang.  The best thing is that they were all having so much fun, they didn’t even realise how much learning was going on!

Another group of early morning explorers tackled Tangrams and either used the pieces to build their own pictures or decided to try to make the pictures shown on cards.

It is lovely to see our pupils eat a healthy breakfast in the morning and to see them safe and happy in the school environment, ready to go into their classes and learn.  If your child has not yet come along to the breakfast club, please feel free to come along for a quick look or ask a member of staff for details.  The more, the merrier!

CALLING ALL P2 PARENTS…REMEMBER WE ARE LAUNCHING OUR ‘FAMILIES CONNECT’ INITIATIVE AT A COFFEE MORNING ON FRIDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER AT 10.00AM

FAMILIES CONNECT IS SAVE THE CHILDREN’S NEW AND EXCITING INITIATIVE, DESIGNED TO HELP PARENTS SUPPORT THEIR CHILD’S LEARNING AT HOME.

This eight-week programme provides a series of creative activities, techniques and games that parents and children can participate in together. It focuses on three key area; language development, numeracy & maths and social & emotional development.

Activities include ‘Snack & Starter’, encouraging parents and children to spend quality time together, as well as Talk Topic, Reflection Time and ‘The Science Bit’ – helping parents to understand how a particular topic will support a child’s learning.  ‘Doing it Together’ gives parents simple take away activities to try with their children at home.

We know that the home learning environment can have a huge impact on a child’s learning. As well as being the place that provides for the basic needs of a child, an effective home learning environment will encourage strong parent and child relationships that help build self-esteem and security and help every child to fulfil their potential.

Research shows that parental involvement in their children’s learning positively affects the child’s academic performance leading to greater problem solving skills, greater school enjoyment, better school attendance and fewer behavioural problems at school. School quality only accounts for 14% of educational attainment, so the better the home learning environment, the greater the child’s attainment can be.

Building a home learning environment – and crucially, increasing parents’ skills and confidence to support their child’s learning, can have a huge impact on a child’s future.

The informal workshops focus on getting parents to reflect on what they already do to support their children’s learning, and inviting them to explore new activities, games and approaches that might enhance this.

We are really excited about Families Connect and can’t wait to see it rolled out in Murrayfield over the next year.  We look forward to working with as many of you as possible.  Come along and join us for our informal coffee morning on Friday 22nd September at 10.00am to hear more about this programme and to register your child/ family in the programme.

Brick Club

I have just received training in LEGO based therapy and I am hoping to begin work soon with some groups of children in our school.

LEGO® based therapy is a social development programme based on the highly structured, systematic and predictable nature of LEGO play.  Through LEGO therapy, children can learn to communicate with others, express their feelings, change their behaviour, develop problem-solving skills and develop a relationship with the world around them.

In order to get started, we will need to build up a bank of LEGO resources to enable us to work with the children.  We would be very grateful if you could have a look for any LEGO or DUPLO in new or very good condition which you would be happy to donate to the school to help us.  Loose LEGO would be great, as would any small, complete boxes of LEGO or DUPLO with instructions included, as instructions are required for some of the activities.

Thank you for your help and support.

Kind regards

Mrs Millar

Bikeability Launch

As part of the Health and Wellbeing in our school we will be starting a Bikeability club in October.

To launch this club we will will be having a sponsored cycle on Monday 2nd October and Tuesday 3rd October to raise money for the STV Children’s Appeal.

Do not worry if your child does not have a bike. Lowport has kindly donated bikes and helmets for us to use at this event.

We will be able to give the money that we have raised to Sean Batty when he visits us on Wednesday 4th October to see what we have been doing for the STV Children’s Appeal.

He will also be judging our “Design a helmet” competition so make sure you get your entries in by Wednesday 27th September.

We appreciate your support in sending your child with their bike and helmet on the appropriate days.

Many Thanks

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

In Primary 4 this week, we have been very busy learning about the farm.   After looking at some farm books, we wrote down our ideas about what we wanted to learn.  We passed the pebble round and talked about farms and discussed food and animals.  We found out how to grow vegetable and how a farm works.  We also found out where chickens and eggs came from.   Or at least we think we did… Tia would like to find out more about how chickens grow in eggs!  Which one came first?  Does anyone know the answer?  Zoe wonders how they make the food for the animals.

Art was very popular as we designed farm pictures based on farm paintings that Mrs Glancey showed us.  We added our own touches and details to our pictures, used pens to colour them in and a paint wash for the sky.

On the Smartboard, we played a game where we had to match the animals to the right answer.  We also made mosaic chickens to go with our Twits story.  They look really colourful on our wall.

Our spelling test is fun and we really like to get the words right in our spelling test, so we practise them in our homework.  Payton says the class did some great writing about Likes and Dislikes.

At Assembly we sang “Don’t build your house” which is one of our favourites, although we probably need to practise the movements because we are getting to do some of the harder bits now that we are in P4!

In Maths, we play Beat That!  We play it every Friday.  What we have to do is write down as many answers we you can in 90 seconds.  Adam enjoys the challenge of the 2 times table.

Compliments of the week go to Ross, who informs us that he is good at answering questions!

All the work was fun this week.  Have a lovely holiday weekend and remember not to come to school on Monday or Tuesday.

P7 and P7/6 News

Today, P7 and P7/6 took part in the live Joe Wicks school workouts this morning. It included an intense work out with lots of different body movements to strengthen and stretch the core muscles. All the boys and girls in Murrayfield really enjoy the Joe Wicks workouts which you can find on Youtube.

Here are some photographs of the children taking part and working hard.

Have a lovely September holiday.
